Well We've seen All Kinds of Weird and Wonderful Wrestling Matches down The Years
haven't We?-LADDER Matches...CHAIN Matches...LOSER 'RETIRES' Matches etc!
Well here's a Real Oddity-and LONG BEFORE The AMERICANS 'thought' of it!!
A HAIRCUT Match!- This is where The Loser has to have his HAIR Shaved off! But a Couple
of 'Strange' Aspects to this One:--It's a KENDO NAGASAKI Contest!!
So We are told IF KENDO Loses the Match-it's his Manager GORGEOUS GEORGE Who
will get his Locks Shorn!!
Well Really!!-Firstly We KNOW KENDO Can't Lose-So We know already Who's getting the
Haircut before the Fight begins!
Secondly We also know that IF he DID Lose-He would have to Unmask and thus be available
to have any Hair Shaved off-Thus meaning GEORGE needn't have to endure the Scissors!!
Personally-I'm Surprised KENDO would get Involved in this kind of 'Pantomime' back in
DECEMBER 1975!
Also he was Contesting a Tag Match Earlier on the SAME Show??!
Did Anyone Witness a 'Haircut' Match Live?
Below is The Programme for this Show at WOLVES CIVIC-Complete with Seat Ticket!!
BARBER In Attendance!!
MAIN MASK
Early 1960s promoter Conrad Davis stopped Dwight J Ingleburgh from shaving off his beard until he had time to arrange a loser to shave off beard match.
Hair versus mask contests are frequent in Mexico
I meant to write "Swann was victorious so the local lad cut Kincaid's hair"
I promoted a hair versus mask challenge at Bollington Civic Hall in the late seventies featuring Jackie "Mr.TV" Pallo versus Le Diable Rouge (Un). I don't think anyone really expected Pallo's golden locks to be shorn. Le Diable Rouge unmasked as Pete Lindberg.
Lindberg was a lovely guy but , without being unkind, not really Olympic standard as a wrestler. Crabtree probably had the right idea when he matched him around the same time against Hans Streiger at The King's Hall, Belle Vue. To much applause, Pete Lindberg did a pre-bout exhibition blowing up and bursting a hot water bottle. The bell then sounded and Streiger kicked seven shades out of him, gaining a two-nil victory within several seconds of rounds one and two.
I also recall around this period Brian Dixon promoting a "loser to have his head shaved" challenge at Liverpool Stadium between villainous Johnny Kincaid and local boy Monty Swann. In Swann's corner was a local barber who, I believe, had a salon not far from the stadium and was known to many in the audience whilst, in Kincaid's corner, was a villainous Woody Waldo in a white barber's coat and I was amazed at how much heat he got just standing in front of the audience at ringside exercising a large pair of clippers. Swann was victorious so the local lad cut his hair but, as I recall, didn't exactly scalp him.
Finally, regarding the six man tag, my guess would be that Jones, Saint, Royal, Faulkner and Kung Fu would all end up ganging together against the rule-breaking Haggetty. I recall attending a Crabtree show recorded for TV at the Town Hall in Stourbridge (some may recall viewing it) which ended with Ian Mc.Gregor,
Kid Mc.Coy and Spiderman (Ray Crawley) teaming up with evil Syd Cooper's partners Eddie Riley and Mike Jordan to gang up on the evil one.
Stupid is as stupid does ...
what a bizarre card, someone was on the wacky baccy when they decided to put this together.
Hair cut matches were happening in the US in the 50s and 60s. And in Mexico, way back to the early 1940's at least.
Neat find though MM.
It happened in Canada MM , that's where the idea came from and Gillette was shaved to save Kendo.
What on earth is Steve Haggetty doing in that tag?
Who on earth is Jalman Singh?
Great talent wasted by bored promoters. They could see what was happening nightly around the halls --- but hard-working local punters couldn't . They just needed proper bouts.
Pantomime as you say.
Just the three bouts? No doubt "Popular" Mick McMichael was in a preliminary contest to fill 50 minutes.
Ugh!
