An addition to the Lew Roseby topic on the old forum from Heritage member Fred. He would love to hear more memories.

hi.
lew was my god father . can only just remember him, seemed a massive bloke to a tiny 4 or 5 yo lad !! he was my mums brother, from a family of 7, they lived in dulgar st, clayton, manc....close to citys etihad ground now.
my mum who died june 2018 used to say they all went to belle vue to cheer him on, tripping his rivals over on the way to the ring ! he died late 60s if i recall, poss early 70s. a gentleman by all accounts. i mostly remember watching him in his b/w referees shirt on WOS sat tea time. i think he was a better ref than fighter !!
main haunts were belle vue, new brighton, liverpool i recall. i think theres just my u albert in dorset left of the 7...late 90s and frail.
cant give much more info as only just recall him,, he used to say i needed donkey muck in my shoes off blackpool beach if i wanted to grow his size !!
many thanks for that..
Lew wrestled into the 1960's and must have been quite well in 1966.
After 1970 Belle Vue often failed to advertise the referee , but for sure Lou was still working with the big TV names.
my sis is gillian.
some great new items appearing here lately...many thanks to those posting.
A couple more of Lew and maybe a clue as to his wartime period.
In 1966 at Nantwich FC the Nantwich and Crewe Round Table played a charity football match against a team of wrestlers.
Lew Roseby , Bert Royal (capt) , Vic Faulkner , Bill Howes , Hans Streiger , Jim Hussey , Al Brown , Vic Stewart , Peter Stewart , Joe Keegan , Alf Cadman , Ken Cadman , Johnny Eagles , and Les Thornton. (3 subs to rotate)
Ref was George Best.
Lovely memories Carol. Thanks.

"He was a good uncle. I knew little of his wrestling as it happened before I was born. But refereeing he used to tell me about. He opened a restaurant with his 2nd wife. After she died he would regularly come over from Blackpool to spend time with us."
Thanks.
These are just the sort of memories that are important to us old codgers. Tiny memories build up to pictures of the past. That's important. Or people like Lew would be forgotten. It's like a jigsaw. We would love to hear your memories of Lew, wrestling related or not.
Great finds Ron. When I watched Lew Roseby wrestle little did I appreciate the history and significance of this man. That could apply to many that we watched. We would all like to hear more from Fred and Carol, it's the only way we can keep the memories alive.
Lew Roseby
Billed as ex amateur champ again here.
If this bill is anything t go by , an ex amateur champion.
Lew Roseby goes a long way back and great to see him here on this bill.
Hi Fred. Lew was my uncle too. Which of the sisters was your Mum?
Best wishes
Carol
Thanks to memories from Eddie Rose we have now added a tribute page to Lew Roseby
Lew Roseby
yes...a better ref than wrestler by all accounts. sadly died before i was old enough to interogate him !!
Always remember him as the "House Referee" at Liverpool Stadium.. Very popular with the crowd.
I saw Lew referee a few times, and seemed a good referee to me. I didn't notice him much, which means he must have been good.
I didn't see him wrestle so can't comment about whether he was a better wrestler or referee. But what have results to do with it Fred? This is wrestling. We will never know. Just be satisfied knowing he was a good un.
thanks for all that Bernarrd.
Yes...by all accounts he was a better referee than wrestler !!! I think thats why my mum and aunties used to try and trip up his opponents en-route to the ring before the fights. I only just remember him going to Belle Vue or Liverpool or poss New Brighton, so Newcastle would be a big deal for him.
I shall look up super Rons lists when I get chance. Thanks for your time and effort
cheers. Fred
keep up the goid work ...great site.

Go to Wrestling Heritage, Galleries, Ron Historyo's albums, half way down page, Newcastle Part 6 ,
and start at no.7 for the first bill.
Good luck!
Fred, If you want to see the bills look up Newcastle galleries for 1951 and 52.
7/4/51 lost by K O to Bill Garnon
5/5/51 1-1 with Bob Silcock
28/7/51 Les Kellett and Tony Baer 2-1 against Alf Cadman and Lew Roseby
20/10/51 Lost to Norman Walsh by 2-1
5/1/52 Lost to Masambula by K O
2/2/52 Alf Cadman and Lew Roseby beat Ron Jackson and Tony Baer 10-9 on points

They didn't make it easy for him. Always a solid, reliable, trustworthy performer without any gimmicks. Sadly for you never a top of the bill man on his own. Hope this helps . Look up the bills . Bernard.
Hi Fred Just posted a few results and lost the post.. Will try another method. Don't give up hope !
