Maybe when it is safe I need to go down to the Liverpool Central Library and see if I can fill in the gaps by looking at the microfilm copies of the Liverpool Echo?
Also of note in 1935 and from what I can see ALL VENUES in Liverpool.
At no time did champ Doug Clark get enticed to work for any of these people.
Of course he self promoted and was also a Relwyskow man , but we do know he had ruled out the London people who tried to position/back Oakeley as champ before Oakeley in any case had to quit with injury.
And again Assirati was missing even though he knew Bankier , possibly/probably from Music Hall times. Of course Bert I think had exiled himself in the South and even went missing from wrestling for a few years. It could also be suggested that he was maybe not such a big star until coming back more into prominence circa 1941 to eventually replace Clark as champ.
Thanks for that info Ron, I didn't realise they were running at New Brighton. That does make things different. I have a few programs from the Tower Ballroom in the 60s. I agree it's unusual that Southern promoters would've bothered running a championship for the North. We are guessing at this stage it may have been a Southern belt (perhaps a Blackfriars one) repurposed for the event.
Bob Gregory was the matchmaker for Harold Lane so I'd say it's simply an exercise in self-promotion.
Thanks Ost , the Queens Drive Baths shows were run by boxing brothers Tommy and Billy Routledge , their father Johnny Routledge had also promoted boxing. They would all have known Johnny best. Bankier was putting on full houses in 1935 and turning people away , hence some twice a week shows and others were trying to muscle in on the opportunity.
You mention the Pavilion , just in case you don't know the geography , it was across the water in new Brighton which had previously had a Tower like Blackpool but had to be pulled down. The Pavillion at the base of it remained and was (and still is) used for wrestling. All the publicity for New Brighton was usually in the Liverpool papers.
Glad you spotted the date of the Lane / Callaghan show in April 1935 because Ruslan asks about the Callaghan Belt on this thread. His pick of the winner , I think Dick Wills was not mentioned so maybe a program change ,but this seems to be the very rare Northern Light heavyweight championship. Not sure how Bob Gregory could have been the 1932/33 champ , did not think he came from the North..... Of note 1934 Holder Harry Brooks.
Tommy and Billy Routledge‘s brother Frank married Joan Best, who was Johnny Best‘s daughter and Billy Best’s sister. Billy Best was a charming man who had fought through North Africa and landed on D-Day with the 8th Hussars. He died around 2000. I know this, because Frank and Joan were my grandparents…
Incredible stuff Ron, thank you so much for taking the time to collect all that information. So much of it is new to me. April 26th was the date of the Lane-Callaghan combine running at the Pavillion, and there was a show at the Stadium that night too. Seems like they had trouble getting into the papers. Who was running the shows at the Queen's Drive Baths?
Yes it is from the Echo , I don't collect results although sometimes Plunkett's Index and Wrestlingdata have their uses , for me not results wise but tracking a wrestlers movements.
In that one year it seems Bankier's policy was everyone had to take wins and loses , no masked men , nor much in the way of championships , some of the ones I thought would have had a better record all had to lose and everyone got a periodic push all to fool the likes of us.
Great though that you enjoy it and stay with us Kid.
That's an amazing labour of love, Ron. Many of us really appreciate it and you are making great contributions to preserving wrestling history. I am compiling a word document with all the results and bills from Liverpool Stadium. If you would like a copy when I have completed it I would be happy to email it to you. I think it would big too big to post here. Thanks again.
O.K. a full 1935 season at the Stadium and nearly all the results.

Osty , I will have a full season ready tomorrow morning. Just can't quite crack it today. It's very slow doing results compared to just collecting images.
Ron, thanks. It's about the KO which lasted few weeks (?) it was for the Light Hwt Title of the North and Jack Callaghan Gold Belt. Dick Wills of Newcastle won it. BUT no results or bills as of yet. Help needed.
Hi Ron, that's great news thanks. Looking forward to your findings. At the moment I am collecting all the British results that are missing. Eventually will get them to wrestlingdata. I actually sent those guys two big envelopes of old result sheets from the 50's a few months ago, so they have plenty to get on with.
Brilliant cover , Boxing of Course but still great.
It was a replacement stadium.

Thanks, as ever, Ron. If you would like me to send you my typed up list of bills/results when complete, please ask and I will be delighted to do do.
Thanks for all your work
I was just re-reading parts of this thread.
The first cutting on page 1 talks about a Lonsdale Belt.
Does anyone know what belt? if it was British ,what about the foreign billed wrestlers in the tournament?.
Just the normal promoter's gobbledegook I presume.

I have put you on what I have which is last 3 months of 1968.
I had been waiting to see if the rest of the year is digitized but for whatever reason nine months have been omitted.
You are welcome to these
Ron, I hope you are well.
I was wondering why there is no 1968 Liverpool Gallery, possibly it has been accidentally erased from the Galleries? Many Thanks

Just out of interest, what is the source of the information? Is it a Liverpool Newspaper - Echo or earlier paper?

Osty , your question about 1935 has prompted me to look again.
I have captured some more bills for that year although in the main the shows were advertised with preamble and a write up the night after the show.
For the Stadium I have the full season which did at one point go to twice a week.
Bankiers shows were packed out.
The Stanley race track did some shows in summer and also Queens Drive Baths.
All I need to do now is present the stadium shows and results in some sort of format.
Are you collecting or doing a bit for Wrestlingdata.com.
So .....working on it.
