I like the way the programme says Half Nelson Keys hasn't given much attention to training for a few months. Now that's selling him.
Carver Doone straight from the pages of English Literature would easily attract new fans
When we talk about decline, it's almost as if decline started in 1931. Because these promoters really knew how to promote, to build up the bouts, to give background, to make the bouts meaningful.
The alternative is to have hundreds and thousands of meaningless bouts, and that is what gradually happened. Fans just wondering ... why?
Jim Wango of course a very emotive name, with a tragic story as we recounted on here ten years ago. And of course he undoubtedly gave his name to Johnny Kwango.
Makes you wonder whether Kwango merely stole the name, or adopted it by way of tribute.
Never heard of Purple Knight but Half Nelson Keyes was fred keyes and even got a big push.
At hull early in 1933 he had a trilogy with Carver Doone (Jack Baltus) , losing the first match , winning the next and coming out on top in the decider.
Big Lad at 18 stones and I suspect a veteran as he had faded away by the late 1930's
It's such a fantastic collection that most of the old wrestlers who are left and even the wrestlers of today should really be on here looking at what has gone before.
Wonderful MM
Really cool stuff, really like the effort they were putting in on posters & programmes in the 30s & 40s. You should think about getting that Belle Vue one framed MM.
Phil Siki (Also known as The Black Arrow)
UK based Trinadian Phil Siki was one of the pre war all in greats who continued to wrestle post war and took part in the World Heavyweight Championship tournament at Harringay on February 18th, 1947. Not just that.. he did also wrestle post war greats Ernest Baldwin, Francis St Clair Gregory, Mitchell Gill, Dave Armstrong, Bill Garnon, Alf Robison, Jack Pye Bert Assirati.. Obviously a top class wrestler who lived up to his title of Heavyweight Champion of the West Indies.
Who was The Black Arrow , and was he masked ?
Lovely stuff as always MM, thanks for taking the time to photograph and post these great items.
