Although Quality Career MASKED WRESTLERS has always been my Special Favourite
Sphere of Activity within The Wrestling-I have to admit I've never really been THAT Interested
in the MEXICAN 'Scene'!! The main reason being that nearly EVERY 'LUCHADOR' wears
a MASK!-which for me somewhat 'devalues and discredits' the Value of the HOOD!-Plus
there were not that MANY MASK vs. MASK Contests!-However there was a Handful of
very Top Calibre Masked Heavyweights who Campaigned in MEXICO and further afield
such as the U.S.A.!-One of the very Best was MIL MASCARAS-The Man of a Thousand
Masks-a Cult Hero in the Sport!-A Great Wrestler in the mould of LE BOURREAU DE
BETHUNE-This Guy was Skilful-Superbly Muscled and VERY Charismatic!Arriving into
the Ring wearing Colourful Garb-he always had on 2!! MASKS-the outer one of which was
not tied and which he removed to give away into the Audience-retaining his Secured
Fighting HOOD beneath!-MIL MASCARAS Fought the Best Opposition including a series
of Encounters with AMERICA'S DESTROYER-Who recently passed away and the other
Top MASKED MEXICAN-EL CANEK!!-His Bouts were Exciting-Entertaining and Great to
watch!-Always rated in Top Ten Lists of All Time Great MASKED Wrestlers-He fully deserves
his place in this Elite Pantheon and in MEXICO today he is an Institution and Cultural Hero
in the Folklore of the Land!-Photos and Article to follow!
MAIN MASK
I don't think it's accurate to say there weren't many mask vs mask matches, they were the traditional end to a long feud between two rivals. The top crowd favourites took the masks (or hair, of already unmasked wrestlers) of many villains. Some wrestlers made a career out of being unmasked, creating a new villainous character, and being unmasked time and time again. If this link works, you can take a look at Mil Mascaras' record of mask & hair wins at the bottom of the page: http://www.luchawiki.com/index.php?title=Mil_M%C3%A1scaras
When I read the American magazines in the 1960s he was certainly one of the two masked men that caught my eye, the other being the Destroyer.
