Talking to a veteran fan at a PCW show recently he spoke of a very good wrestler called Maurice Whitfield from the late 1950s.Cannot find him in the A-Z unless of course he used different names. Does anyone remember him?
Ironically PCW were hoping to have a socially distanced event this weekend. This proved to be wildly optimistic because Preston is now back in lockdown!
Well there's no hope for meeting up with the Whitfield fan in the foreseeable future for you Peter, so Maurice Whitfield will be added to the Local Heroes series this Sunday. We can always add more information later.
Of course he should Peter. Along with our other recent discovery Taffy Jones. For the first time since Heritage started we have now exhausted our planned list of new entries to the A-Z. So these two may have to wait a while until we have a few more to join them. Unless, you're off to Preston again soon Peter. Let us know when you are and we'll add him before then so that you can tell the fella you met if you see him again.
He would never have imagined having lived in the pre internet era that his career as a Professional Wrestler would be the subject of discussion internationally sixty years later
Wrestler Norman Curry has come to our rescue. Maurice Whitfield was a middleweight from a village in County Durham, three miles north of the city of Durham. He died about thirty years ago.
Bobby Robson also came from Sacriston. He is marginally more famous.
We are not doing too well. More from Jimmy Devlin that Maurice dud some work for Digger Rowell and weighed about 13 - 14 stones.
Les Prest doesn't remember him, but he would be a bit before his time. I thought Jim McCormack or Ray Clark might have known him. Jim doesn't know him. Ray remembers the name but nothing about him.
Not really. Jimmy Devlin phoned and said he remembered working on a show with him in the early sixties. Thought he came from North East way. Didn't know anything more about him other than him being "A nice lad." I'm hoping one of the others can come up with a bit more.
One poster bills him from Newcastle the other Durham which negates the idea he was very local to Preston. The next time I attend an event in Preston which will not be until next year I will look out for the chap I was speaking to-it is quite unusual these days to speak to anyone at an event who remembers any wrestler apart from the dreaded Crabtree and Haystacks!

Have a look for him Peter, tell him of your success and get him on here!
No more visits to Preston until next year but it is always gratifying when someone somewhere remembers less well known mid card wrestlers

Should he now get a short entry in the A-Z?

WE got there in the end but it looks like he might have cut short his wrestling for other employment unless or maybe because he got injured.

Thanks for all the replies

Any more news?
Hopes are on Jimmy Devlin, Dickie Swales and Pete Ross. Frank Robb is another hopeful but Les doesn't see him as often.
Lets hope he comes up with some more info
Les says he will ask the lads on Monday.
Les Prest if you are reading , please ask some of the older boys .
Possible he could still be alive
I think Hack has contact with the North East lads and some of the older ones might know him.
Sam Betts and Boy Devlin were on that promotion at that time.
