I thought I'd posted this earlier, so if anyone finds it hidden somewhere let me know.
We've received this message. I haven't heard of this man but there were som any working for the independents in the 1960s.
Michael John Quinn of Armthorpe near Doncaster.
Mick "The Mighty" Quinn passed away shortly after midnight, Fri 9th - Saturday 10th April, in Wheatley Hills Doncaster.
He was 86.
Mick is survived by one sister, two daughters (who were in attendance) and two sons.
After a demanding army career, Mick became a Doncaster bus driver and then inspector.
Following on from his success as an army boxer, Mick retrained for wrestling.
He was the original, pre-TV "Mighty Quinn"
Mick trained local wresters, such as his friend "Catweasel", and Yorkshire's first women wrestlers.
He regretted being too old to try cage fighting.
I have found no online reference to M J Quinn.
Perhaps others would be kind enough to post an anecdote.
Yours faithfully,
Ian L Stevenson
In the 1960s there were probably more than a thousand wrestlers who played their part in making wrestling great. The majority will go unforgotten were it not for sites like Wrestling Heritage and relatives like you. It seems likely your uncle worked for what we call independent or opposition promoters. As these had no tv coverage there is little documentation of their matches, which makes them no less important than their more remembered names.
