Good morning, I love reading the weekly newsletters and was fascinated by one a couple of weeks ago referring to a title fight between Mike Marino (who I saw many times in my wrestling-watching days of mid '60s to mid '70s) and Bill Howes who I did not see, to the best of my recollection.
Does anyone know the outcome of that fight in January 1972, please?
I also thought the side stake of £2,000 seemed a lot of money for then - or was that kind of thing just a publicity stunt as we were all a bit more naive about wrestling back then!
Many thanks and with kind regards to all.

But they're both Southerners: Howes from Bristol.
Anglo, you know very well that Billy Howes by now had drunk enough pints of Boddingtons in his Bolton pubs to make him a Lancashire lad. Your logic will next be telling us that Marino was Italian. This was just a Morrell move to put one of his boys on against the Dale Martin Golden Boy (smart move in Morrell's London venue) and arrange a result that wouldn't upset anyone except the fans.
But they're both Southerners: Howes from Bristol.

The two fights at the bottom of this bill are potentially the best
For once I can't agree with Peter. And very strongly. Going back to my memory at that time the only match that would interest me would be the Howes and Marino match. To me that southerner Marino was questioning our boys champion credentials. This needed sorting.

No Marino didn't win, less likely as this was a Morrell show. Going from memory I know the result was inconclusive and settled nothing, Howes continued as European champion in the north. Not certain, but if memory is right, it was a double disqualification.
Side stake was definetly Kayfabe
Hi PETER.S-Many Thanx for your Post!-Because it was the 'Narrative'-MARINO rarely
Lost a Bout-which I Never Agreed with!!-I Do Remember however when MIKE Lost by
a Single Fall to ALBERT WALL!-And of course he Lost Most of his Matches to KENDO
NAGASAKI!!-But These Aside My Bet is he Won The Bout against BILLY HOWES!
KENDO told Me that HOWES was One Tough Son of a So and So but MARINO was
always Higher Up the 'Pecking Order than HOWES and by 1972 Both were getting
Long in the Tooth!
'Sidestakes' were Largely 'Fictional'!!-To Build The Fight!!
I've Probably got This Programme(s)-I'll Dig a Few Out-Many have The Results
Annotated!!-Hold The Phone!!
