wow. what a great find! speechless. made my day!!! thank you so very much Ron! truly appreciate that! so many fantastic names in this list! so many great champions, the true legends of pro wrestling! I would classify them into separate groups.
Englishmen, the catcheurs, Bibby, Acton, Connors, Tom Cannon the greatest British wrestler of XIX c., by the way Wm Schora of Ashton-under-Lyne (THE GREATEST!!!) is missed he also made it to America and stayed here for the rest of his life.
Americans, J.H. McLaughlin 'Paddy' of Detroit MI, the one and only first pro collar and elbow champion wrestler of America!!! Wm Muldoon - the greatest American pro wrestler of XIX c, period! Jack Carkeek - King of Wrestlers! Evan Lewis, the original strangler, first American catcheur! D. C. Ross the all-around champion athlete of America! Farmer Burns, the father of circus-style pro wrestling, the "American fashion"!
Frenchmen, Bauer and Christol, both undisputed kings of mat!
and of course The One and Only - The Original Golden Greek - Antonio Pierri, The Man With A Midas Touch who turned into $$$ everything he touched!
Excellent find, Ron, I love this sort of stuff. None of us know how truthful or accurate the information is, but if it is correct, it must have taken quite a while to track all of these people down and find out where they were and what they were doing, via pen and paper/letter.
Edit: Are we sure that the newspaper article date is correct? (1907), I just took a quick look at the date-of-birth of a few of the wrestlers mentioned (Connors, Acton, Carkeek) and the ages, above, don't match. Tom Connors was still wrestling in the USA up to 1911, and Bauer seems to have died in 1901 (assuming this is Theobaud Bauer, not Theodor). Duncan C. Ross would have been 51 in 1907.
Wonder if someone made all the above up, thinking no one would ever find out?
Hi Sax , the Newspaper Date is right but I must agree the ages of some don't look to be what was widely thought. The trouble is for researchers is getting the genealogy right and making sure we have the right man. But I have seen many travel docs for wrestlers where their age is not the same and for sure it is the same man. census records are full of incorrect details and who knows why.
But in it's own right some of the comments may be news.
I have looked at Tom Connors before and have him on the census , plus his death and he can be traced anywhere betweem 1860 and 62 for birth. I think he was a bit older than 77 which was reported when he died in 1939. His age in the above article is was out and I think the same with Acton.
But for accuracy Connors was indeed an Inn Keeper at the Cattle Market Tavern , Cross lane at one point.

A counter point to the White Owl in the other thread
A great find Ron. I take your point about possible (likely) inaccuracies but three of them reportedly still wrestling in their fifties.
Some great names there Ron. The original Strangler Lewis and Greek George who I was reading about just a couple of weeks ago.
