With the Arrival of GEORGES HACKENSCHMIDT and the rise in the Popularity of
Wrestling-More and more Photos of Famous Wrestlers began to appear in Magazines/
Programmes/Adverts etc. This started to become more frequent around the Year 1900
and after! But when was the first EVER Photo of a Confirmed Wrestler taken?
What was the Year? Who can guess before this Photo follows soon?
MAIN MASK
Lurich and Nurlah (2 m, 160 kg)
Thanks for the interesting reply
Does anyone know the significance of the shash these wrestlers are wearing
my dear friend who is French wrestling historian owns these two photos...its 1860s.
Nourlah in Russia.
here Nourlah is called Bulgarian...not surprised it was part of Ottoman Empire when he was born.
Dear Main Mask and Forum Members, Turkish wrestler from that "1850 photo" is Nurullah Hasan aka Filiz Nurullah Pehlivan (1867-1912), who in fact was a huge man, 7'2 (218 cm) tall and weighed 387 lb (175 kg) .
A very good friend of mine who is a Turkish pro wrestling historian recognized the man from that photo.
Here's the photo referred to in the title. Known to be genuine as it was taken by Main Mask himself.
The photo of Steve Wright that Main Mask refers to Ruslan is the same photo of Steve in the belt you have had before and has already been posted more than once.
was he European or he was American?
Was the photo of a French wrestler?
Main Mask do you have any info on the Wryton Belt? I would love to know name of at least one wrestler who won it and where/when it happened. Thanks, R
as far as Lancashire catch wrestling...probably John Meadowcroft, since he was first official Champion Wrestler of Lancashire at catch wrestling, weight class 9st, 1861.
