Back to 1959, whilst I was stuck in Mrs Woodcock's reception class there was wrestling going on. Is John DaSilva the only one still with us?
Move on to 1966 and a fancy night out. Not tooooo bad.
1978, and I was in Birmingham, my first job at Great Barr Comp.
Howes and Czeslaw must have been a rarity I would have thought. Sounds interesting, though I would have expected that a Howes win would never be in doubt. A good bill there from Main Mask. The fly in the ointment Bartelli and Maxine. The issue with Bartelli by this time wasn't just that he had gone on too long (he had) but that he could have been forgiven for that if he was moving gracefully down the ranks. He didn't. He was still being billed as the great wrestler he had been. So that being said putting him in with a middleweight did nothing for his status. Do you remember anything of the match Main Mask. Go on, now tell us it was the best of the night.
Wrestling overseas on this day, Adrian Street defeated Speedy Talltree in Memphis, Tennessee, USA, on this day in 1985.
On our TV screens, on this day in 1974:-
Mick McManus (1) v Tony St Clair (1)
Mike Marino (1) v Caswell Martin (0)
Peter Szakacs (1) v Robby Baron (0)
16 March 1959
Jack Dempsey drew with Jack Cunningham at High Wycombe in British welterweight championship
Nice one Ost. I like the way Wigan, Wakefield, Leeds and New Zealand equates to the world.
Here's the poster for the top bill. Pretty stoked to have unearthed this:
Working overseas, on this day back in 1953, Mitchell Gill (as "Red Scorpion"), beat Dara Singh, in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. A rare loss for Singh!
On our TV screens, on this day in 1968: -
Tibor Szakacs (W) v Steve Haggerty
Karlum Gaston v Colin Joynson (W)
Peter Szakacs v Mike Eagers (W)
