Thanks so much, dear Graham. Exactly how I saw BG.
The worst type of doorman was the type who was spoiling for a fight himself. Quite a few of the wrestlers did door work and I believe that Klondyke Jake was one of the best because he had no ego and knew he was capable of handling any situation. Therefore he could be pushed quite far by Johnny Halfwit without responding but, if and when he did respond, the situation was sorted.
I think Bobby Graham was a doorman at the Fiesta Club in Sheffield, with Eric Cutler.
Let me correct my comment to saying that Bobby Graham gave the impression of being a hard-hitter. He was an all-action competitor and particularly revelled in facing a lighter man such as Preston whom he could throw all over the ring; usually making sure that his opponent's legs got caught up in the ropes before softening them up for a Boston. From dressing-room talk that I picked up on, Graham was known for being a light worker and had a reputation for being a very safe pair of hands.
As I have stated in previous contributions, I was a big fan of his and would have loved to have paired him with Lee Sharron in some tag match offerings but I rang him at the end of his career and, although polite, he was also very business-like and to the point in telling me that he wasn't interested in any bookings.
Love your comments, Graham, but surprised to read you saying that your namesake Bobby was a hard hitter. Really?
Crikey, miss a day on here and so much happens!
Today is the anniversary of the death of Davey Boy Smith.
As I have contributed previously, the winner of the Bolton K.O. tournament was local man Keith Martinelli. Surprising at first sight when you see the three illustrious co-participants.
The bout that stands out for me from the Aberdeen flyer is Bobby Graham versus Peter Preston; two particularly hard-hitting exponents of the art. I had the privilege of refereeing Preston for Bobby Barron on a handful of occasions. I never saw this particular bout but I did see Preston and partner versus Graham and partner on a handful of occasions on Morrell and Beresford shows at Belle Vue (Preston being partnered by Alan Colbeck and Graham being partnered on separate occasions by Leon Arras and Steve Haggetty). Preston would soak up much of the punishment with wily Colbeck just tagging in occasionally to exchange a few quick holds then tag out again. If my memory serves correctly, on both occasions the tags went the full twenty minutes cats.
As mentioned last week (when the preceding week's poster to this was shown), from 1963:
