Anniversaries today of the death of two wrestlers that were great in contrasting ways.
In 2008 the death of Bob Sherry, an often overlooked welterweight who was in the same class as Dempsey and Colbeck.
In 2017 the death of an exciting heavyweight, the masked Samurai, Blackpool's Rex Strong.
Wrestling overseas today, Chris Adams wrestled to a double disqualification with Kevin Von Erich, in San Antonio, Texas, USA, on this day in 1984.
On our TV screens, on this day in 1961:-
Ernie Riley v Albert Wall
Josef Zaranoff v Bill Rawlings
Johnny Allen v Reg Williams
Harry Fields 2-0 Frank O'Donnell
Here's a corker. Only Portsmouth had these luminous posters:
25 November 1932
Birth of Tiger Delmonte
He's in the A-Z
Rex worked on the inshore lifeboat at Blackpool for many years. An entertaining lad and a good wrestler. Eddie Rose (Manchester)
Memories of Bob Sherry.. I can still feel the bruises. He was one of the toughest wrestlers of his time. He was also a great lad to be with and to wrestle in the ring. His main interests were fell running and horse betting and he used to carry a hefty form book on long journeys and bore me to death with horse and betting info! Much missed apart from the bruises. Eddie Rose (Manchester)
I have a theory: when the name is repeatedly spelt wrongly like Kay here, it's not their real name. Viedor was often spelt wrongly. Penzy and Streiger .....
Wensor above is never spelt wrongly, but could easily be.
Is Garnon strong enough/ They'd been rehearsing this match for twenty years so I think they would know.
Anyone know if this Logger Johnny Diamond form Canada was the same Johnny Diamond from Birmingham I watched ten years later?
