In 1938 the Daily Express sports reporter Henry Rose wrote that until yesterday he had seen neither television or all-in wrestling. His first experience of television was to watch a wrestling match between Earl McCready and Anaconda.
His opinion of both? The television was astonishing, the wrestling was nauseating.
In 2011 the death of Sheik Michael Taylor.
Wrestling overseas today, Judo Pete Roberts defeated Rene Lasartesse, in Stade, Germany, on this day in 1976.
On our TV screens, on this day in 1968:-
Mike Marino v Johnny Yearsley;
Clay Thomson v Tug Holton
Peter Cortez v Peter Szakacs
Not exactly top of the bill but here is Garfield sixty years ago to the day in Winnipeg.
Pretty sure at one time or another he tagged with Winrush and Haggerty and I expect he knew Watson and Demchuk well.
In 1997 the death of The Bearded Wrestler. You might have heard the name before and seen it on some of Ron's bills. He was a mystery for ages until Ron discovered the name Patrick O'Connor and he was a famous artist. He's in the A-Z Patrick O'Connor died on 27th April, 1997.

We revealed in our 1973 Year of Wrestling on this site:
"During the summer, one of wrestling’s greatest mysteries was finally resolved with the following announcement in wrestling programmes: "So many people write and ask us is it 'Viedor' or 'Veidor?' that we feel we should settle the matter once and for all. It's VIEDOR ... and that's on no less authority than Steve himself."
☺
Whilst acknowledging that Viedor is probably a made-up word, if it were real, in German this would be the spelling to reflect our pronunciation. Veidor --- aaaargh, I never type that --- would be pronounced Vye-door.
But that's all a sideline to the question of how he slalomed his way through various names for no apparent reason? I do recall Kent Walton liked calling him Steve Viedor Bell (just to get one up on the caption.)
Bill Howes "The Bristol Bomber" from Bolton?.
Red for blood black for heart.
"Stan Veidor Bell", don't think I have seen him listed like that before?
These posters never fail to dumbfound.
Roige et Noir thrust into the main event. At least he had to be able to sell Bert's show. Who on earth was he? Promoter clearly gave up in trying to write French at all correctly.
And then the mystery that is Hermann Viedor.
Who became Steve Bell.
And then Steve Viedor (occasionally spelt wrongly).
The name must have meant something to the wrestler. How on earth did he let it get mangled throughout his career?
Roige et Noir looks like a cunning anagram of Roger Somebody .... but I can't solve it.
A fortnight at Doncaster, 1963:
