This looks on paper to have been a very good show although, of course, Dixon shows of the time rarely served up what was billed on the posters. I caught Mitzi Mueller versus Paula Valdez a handful of times and it was a very good wrestling bout as, long before her association with Dave Finlay, Paula was a blue eye and a good, clean, fast-moving bout between two ladies was quite a rarity. I've no idea who Catwoman was (possibly Patti Mc.Goohan or Lolita Loren taking on their older sister) but "Hellcat" Haggetty was the original Klondyke Kate and oldest Cassidy daughter. Mueller versus Hellcat was a common bout at the time and I guess that would have been the final.
I notice a spelling mistake on the advert, not uncommon for a wrestling flyer. Steve Taylor (Eric's son) usually wrestled at the start of his career as Steve Mc.Cormack. I assume the reason for that was that many of his earliest bouts were wrestling his father so they wanted to hide their relationship from the punters. When younger brother Dave started he used the family name so Eric donned the bonnet and became The Exorcist (or sometimes The Outlaw) so that father could wrestle son without the public knowing.
I only used Majid Ackra twice, right at the end of his career (probably his last two bouts in fact) booking him against Lee Sharron at Halton British Legion, Runcorn, and against Abe Ginsberg at The Dixon Arms ballroom in Chelford. Both complained gently that he was stiff but, even in his final bouts, he had a great sense of authority and presence and I am proud to be able to say that I promoted him.
Wrestling overseas, on this day in history, Ray Glendenning was in winning form against Pepe Villa, in a match in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, on this day in 1972.
London v The Rest was pretty grim. For a start, the London promoter could easily have had seven London bouts to make it a whole night worth following through.
No trophy. No meaning. No story.
Just a deliberately misleading poster trying to make those in a hurry or casual browsers believe it was McManus v Pallo V.
Wrestling overseas today, Mal Kirk and Tony St. Clair went to a time limit draw, in Hamburg, Germany, on this day in 1984.
On our TV screens, on this day in 1970:-
Johnny Kincaid (0) v Jimmy Ryan (1)
Geoff Portz (1) v Mal Kirk (1)
Sorry made a mistake Eugen died in 1996.
Could Gene Wiesenberger have been Eugen Wiesenberger Born in Austria who began wrestling in 1967 and stopped wrestling in 1984. Eugen died in 1984.
