03 September 1939Britain at war and the Prime Minister announced that all cinemas, theatres and other places of entertainment were to be closed until further notice. Indoor and outdoor sports gatherings were to be prohibited also.
At DUDLEY-On This 3RD SEPTEMBER- We Have an Independent Bill with SomeNames HACK Will No Doubt Recognise?!Apart From MAD JOCK CAMPBELL-I Can't Say I'm Over-Familiar with Many ofThe Others!!
Dudley was an interesting venue in the 1960s. There were two independent promoters, Jerry Jeary and Vic kendrick. At times Sunday shows started at 12 noon.
Hill Billy could well have been Bill Coverdale, but others used the name. Mick LaRoache was Michael Charles from Great Yarmouth , son of wrestler Mick Charles. The only Pancho Gonzales I know is Aguirre “Wildcat” Garcia, but I can't see him turning up in Dudley at any time of the day. Pierre Du Prey was a name used by Pete Lapaque. Legs Valentine is in the A-Z. Ivor Powell is a name I know, but that's all. Never heard of Satmir Singh, there are so many Singhs.
That was an absolute stinker on Hastings Pier, Main Mask.
Kwango quite the wrong opponent for Steele; similarly Myers for Torontos. The whole thing could have been rejigged. But DMs did't want a newbie in with an untrustworthy non-Southerner, so Carlo and Steele were separated.
@adrianpollard.shangri-la there was Pancho Gonzales (from Peru), who wrestled in the UK in the 1960's as "Wildcat Garcia", not sure if this is the same person or not.

I was there for this one and although it was almost thirty years ago, I can recall parts of it quite vividly.

I notice on the Dagenham bill Gypsy Joe Smith and Bobby Burns tagging together in 1964 4 years before they became the White phantoms.

Wrestling overseas today, Butcher Johnson defeated Joaquin Saludes, in Barcelona, Spain, on this day in 1948.
On our TV screens, on this day in 1960: -
Billy Joyce v Albert Wall
Arthur Ricardo v Cyril Morris
