On this day in 1963 Norman Walsh defended his British mid heavyweight title at York against Farmer John Allan, the match ending in a double knock out.
1978 was a time I was losing interest in wrestling, but this bill includes a lot of talent that I would happily have watched.
From PWInsider.com:
1983 - World Class Championship Wrestling ran the Dallas Sportatorium with the following results:
-Chris Adams & Johnny Mantell defeated Jimmy Garvin & Buddy Roberts by DQ. -Chris Adams defeated Buddy Roberts.
I had my first bout versus Micky Coen, a good middleweight from the West of Ireland and in the construction business- outside of the ring!. I found him to be a friendly guy - outside the ring only! In the ring fast, agile and very strong. Returned to Ireland around 1970 I believe.

It was a close thing for British mid heavyweight champion Norman Walsh when he defended his title against Farmer John Allan at York as both men were counted out.
Whoaaah! Garfield on tv. Oh to see the film of that...
Here's the programme for the above poster: love the way the promoter felt the Devonian was more representative of a Northerner.
Wrestling overseas today, Judo Al Hayes beat the dastardly Dr. Adolf Kaiser, in Paris, France, on this day in 1960.
On our TV screens, on this day in 1964:-

1963 and a grand night out in Blackpooooool
Ron, good to see the original Golden Ace who we discussed some time back. You could be right about Billy Joyce, Joe was his brother and maybe he didn't want to trade on his name. Years back there was talk of another Bob Robinson prior to Billy Joyce, but when I asked Roy Wood about it he said he didn't think there was anything in it. We have seen Bob Robinson in 1950s Dale Martin land but the feeling this was Billy Joyce.
Two men from Yourkshire. Vines and Davies you were referring to. Six altogether, they could have had a mini bus. Shirley, Leon, Gwyn, Don, Masam and Ray?
Good to see Al joining this topic - the usual bit of class we expect from Mr Morrell.
And a few years after he left England I give you a shot at Billy Robinson on November 4th 1973.
And a really old one. Billy Riley was match maker for these promoters.
I went to this show and will talk you through.
Hells Angels sold everything the Borgs did at great speed but still won , Steel v Masambula was never one of my picks and Masam won.
Daddy absolutely splattered Aras in about 15 seconds and Aras ridiculously oversold it by running at Daddy and knocking himself out , and it looked so fake you could not believe it.
Davies never got into the fight with Vines who blindside punched and used foreign object on Davies's eyes. It was savage. Ray Plunkett has it down as a Vines win , I am vague but thought he was disqualified. Davies was led from the ring blind.
It looked so real and I waited round the back to get a look at Davies and I did. His eyes were a mess and he looked beaten up.
Make of it what you will but I have never forgotten it. There was no rematch.
Two men from Yorkshire , did they actually go home together after a secret meet.
Yes Hack , you have to think deep and remember the smell of Cigarette Smoke mingled with beer and perfume in these old times. Some of the clubs were really rough and yet pop stars were cutting their teeth in them. No wrestler , still , has really come forwards yet to actually describe the size and scene in the Russel Club in Hulme which was such a Wryton training ground.
Onto another famous Manchester venue we know the sheer number of time Billy Joyce showcased matches with his pupil Billy Robinson , slowly passing the baton in the 1960's , but look during the war Billy Joyce is here learning from his mentor in exactly the same way. There is even a hint here on why he did not choose the name Robinson to wrestle with.
I do enjoy the nostalgia bits when you find outba bit of the halls history Ron. A reminder to everyone to re-read your Manchester Investigations series. There must have been dozens of these Manchester clubs. Sam Betts has talked about the wrestlers and cabaret being ferried from one to another by mini bus.
I wonder if what looks like John Ball was Hanley's John Hall I mentioned. I didn't see Mick Coen but Eddie has talked about him.
Well I have a poster that very same night (1963.) that the great Norman Walsh was fighting.
We talked about lesser lights such as Lord Bertie Topham not looking good enough for Joint , but a man who found plenty of work and remembered affectionately by Hack.
Shorrocks was a Dance Hall rather than seedy nightclub I belive and on Brunswick Street in Manchester. (Ardwick I think) I love a bit of nostalgia. the photo is a very close match in time to the bill.
A fair bet O'Shea was promoting.
