Using a revered name such as Doctor Death and putting in, in the kindest way, Tom, Dick or Harry is what helped to undermine the credibility in the sport.
Certainly true Graham. Though don't agree fans paying for a one off should be subject to this rubbish.
Pete Evans was certainly alive and kicking a couple of years ago, though he's missing from our 1960s list. Not heard anything of Billy Yukon for 50 years.
Billy Yukon was a regular on the west midlands independent circuit and I recall promoting him against Pete Evans on the opening bout of one of my shows at The Gala Baths, West Bromwich. It was a good little bout which proved to be a good, solid opener for my show.
But Yukon was not an ideal opponent for Nagasaki. Using a revered name such as Doctor Death and putting in, in the kindest way, Tom, Dick or Harry is what helped to undermine the credibility in the sport. It would be understandable if you were closing down a venue or doing a one-off there but it was no way to build up a long-established hall steeped in wrestling history.
Working overseas, on this day, it's Anglo Italian's fave, Alan Garfield who was in winning form against Ted Lewin (who I think died this week), in Buffalo, New York, USA, on this day in 1954.
On our TV screens, on this day in 1966: -
Billy Torontos (Chicago, US) v Steve Logan (Brixton) (W)
Tony Borg (Malta) (2) v Tony Skarlo (Bermondsey) (0)
Ray Fury (replacing Billy Joyce) (W) v Charlie Fisher (Eltham)
We hadn't really known the White Phantoms until a couple of years ago on here; recently they've been popping up all over the place.
They had a good run, at a time when tag teams were developing and booming. The Magyars, Hells Angels, Artful Dodgers and Sepia Set were all from the same vintage. I wonder why the White Phantoms didn't go on with it?

I'm pretty sure Billy Yukon passed on some years back. Unless anyone knows to the contrary, I think Pete Evans is still with us.

Here he is. Are you out there Billy?
Oh, thanks Saxonwolf. That is very early in Garfield's American career. He must really have been something.
And you cite Logan v Torontos: come to think of it, I've never seen that bout on any other bill. Yet very equally weighted.

Exactly the same double main event as 17 miles along the coast in Hastings on 1st August.
Stan Karoly still bugging me, in the Gray Hobman category.

Our old mates the White Phantoms at the Fairfield Halls in 1968.
63 Heacham, probably the event of the year!
77 Belle Vue, I was there, Dr Death turned out to be Billy Yukon that night.
