I can understand what Anglo Italian is saying that the billing fails to acknowledge the value of the RAH trophy. Though that was a local opinion. I'm sure those of us in Preston, Barnsley or Kilmarnock didn't give a monkey's about the RAH trophy. But this was a DM show in DM land and was another missed opportunity. But as a brand, as some would say these days, Gordienko was way ahead of Nelson.
It's over 50 years ago so I don't think any of us have first hand knowledge to comment on Maivia's skill but I remember him as a very charismatic wrestler and this would have been an attractive main event.
Not denying it was true, Saxonwolf. Just saying that it didn't need mentioning at all when there were two other Canadians on the bill. Gordie took umbrage and donned a mask ...
It also detracted from the RAH Trophy, at that time a crown jewel, that Gordon Nelson had just won and is mentioned.
Any matches out there between Gordi and Gordie?
Unusual superb bill by Dale's, 4 top north American imports, Maivia's ring work would have deflated the show.
Actually it had been over a year since he'd won the trophy.
What a stinker there in Shoreditch, Ost!
Canada's greatest wrestler.
On the very bill where they also have Gordon Nelson, from Canada, just after winning the RAH Trophy.
Hardly builds him or the trophy up, does it? They could have found more diplomatic sensationalism.
1965:
I would imagine that Nagasaki, Portz, Hurst and Gordienko, whiled away the hours, travelling from town to town, talking about the old days, in Britain!
