Our Programme for Today's Newsletter-18TH FEBRUARY in 1971 is somewhat of a 'Conundrum'!??
We are at ILFORD BATHS in ILFORD-and There are 2 Ways of 'Viewing' This Bill!!
PREMIER PROMOTIONS are telling Us that The BORG!!-Twins are in Tag Wrestling with the SKARLO
Boys!-The FIRST Names are Correct but Examine the Last Names??
Are These Spellings Deliberately Wrong because These Wrestlers are NOT the 'Original' Fighters?-
Or are they Just Sloppy Careless Print Copy??
Also-it is Very Unlikely that This 'Advertised' Doctor Death is The Original PAUL LINCOLN??-By 1971-
PAUL LINCOLN PROMOTIONS was Still Operating-So Why would The Original Wrestle for PREMIER?
And again EDDIE STRATTEN was Killed when Hit by a Car in the Street-I'm not Sure of the Exact Date without Checking-Was it Before THIS Date or After THIS Date!
And SURELY by 1971 BOB ARCHER O'BRIEN-Here Spelled Wrongly AS WELL!!-was NO LONGER in
The Ring???
So is This 'Unscrupulous Billing' or Just Terrible and Careless Mis-Spelling of The Real Wrestler's Names??
MAIN MASK
Just a thought. If this was genuine, which I'm inclined to think it was (always err on the side of incompetence) it would be a pretty good bill.
So if both Anglo Italian and I think this could well be genuine the only conclusion is that it's fake.
My initial thought at Anglo's reasoning for the deliberate sloppyness was that it was ridiculous. That thought only lasted only a few seconds because we've both been told of steps Dale Martin went to to eradicate their opposition. But then would Dale Martin have been a bit too smart for that? Maybe. Maybe not.
I saw Professor Eddie Stratton in 1974, so no problems there.
Peter Kelly always inextricably linked with the Skarlos.
I could see another reason. Maybe it was deliberately sloppy so as not to upset Dale Martins, and let them think that the Borks and Sparlows were rip-offs of the originals, in case they ever got found out. Never under-estimate people. The rest of the bill is well prtesented and the sloppiness has beautiful symmetry about it. Too beautiful.
Well I checked to see if 18th February was a Thursday because it looked like this might be the only genuine thing on this bill. Everything points to this being bogus.
But let's not be too quick to jump in.
The Scarlo's and the Borgs were working for the independents. Bob Archer O'Brien was in his last year of making occasional appearances for the independents. I don't know when Eddie Stratton died but he was definitely on the bills in 1971. Of course it wouldn't be the original Dr Death, but then it rarely was - even when the original was around.
Premier Promotions had a good pedigree going back to the 1930s until eventually working in co-operation with Joint in 1962.
So everything points to this being unscrupulous, but I reckon it's just a mess and could well be genuine.
