Gordon Smith was a total gentleman and Ernest Baldwin and Ron Johnson were old school and knew the game inside out. I may not have been entirely enamored by one of the names on Ian's list but I couldn't fault his refereeing.
I do agree with Ron. I only took note of Don Branch, Martin Conroy and Emile Poilve because they were the Joint refs I saw regularly and were all good. Dixon I noticed because I knew him. Most of the independent referees were anonymous, some good some not so good.
I never took much notice of them and expected them to more or less let it flow. I don't bother about them with Football , too much is made of their influence.
If I chose a couple it would be Conroy and Baldwin. They always looked the part.
Crabtree's comedy show was way over the top and out of place .
Some for the older school were also on my list, DOUG RELWYSKOW , JOE HILL, GORDON SMITH, ERNEST LOFTHOUSE, ERNEST BALDWIN> to mebtion just a few more to add to the list.
Gentlemen, are you sure you know what you are talking about? Look at the site for 3 November. Top of the bill. There it is. Special referee : Popular Brian Crabtree
Saxon interesting comment about refs who could do a bit be interesting to see what the consensus is,a few who liked like they couldn't certainly could, still fascinated by the view from the seats and as Jack Atherton said that view is most important
Another vote here for Geoff Kaye and Emile Poilve. Max Ward could get involved in the action because he looked like a bruiser, being an ex-wrestler himself.
The worst one wins by a landslide of popular consent. Horrible to watch. But at least causes us to analyse more closely all the others and appreciate the worth of the invisible ones like Bernard Murray.
Least favourite was a wrestler who must have been roped in at the last minute because nobody else was available. No names, but he was Australian and, apparently, a good ballroom dancer.
Hmmmm well my two are very predictable Emile Poilve superb knew game inside out.Worst is the pirouetting st tropez holidaying Popular referee Brian Crabtree.just a word on others mentioned Don Branch was very good and the Morell fall out ended that.Alan Colbeck superb wrestler good referee.
Yes he was about as good as Max Wall would have been, but not as funny. I refer, of course, to the referee whose name should not be mentioned. Oops, Powerlock has gone and mentioned it.

Most of the refs in the era covered by this site were better than most of the refs of 2020

Regards to all, Ian
Bernard Murray, another superb wrestler.
Bernard Murray was very good in the televised contests i've seen
Another one I liked was Martin Conroy. A young Mr Dixon, circa 1970, looked overawed and did not impress.
If you want to talk about referees who could wrestle a bit, look at my favourite.

Geoff Kaye was my favourite. He was still wrestling a bit into the 1990s as well.
Max Ward developed the role more than most.
I liked Tiny Carr, too.

I agree with Matey Dave for favourite, Brian Crabtree for worst.
used to like Lou Marco and Tiny Carr
Favourite was Max Ward.
Least favourite was a wrestler who must have been roped in at the last minute because nobody else was available. No names, but he was Australian and, apparently, a good ballroom dancer.
My favourite referee was Les Kellett.
Anyone who reads this site knows my least favourite.
