Tomorrow April 22nd will be the anniversary of the passing of another wrestling great and one of my heroes Canadian Mighty John Quinn. It just seems like yesterday that I was young lad of 12-13 when he first appeared on our television screens on World Of Sport way back in 1979 ranting his anti British opinions to the enraged ringsiders. Being young and easily influenced I went along with Max Crabtree’s clever marketing and i initially hated the ex lumberjack and couldn’t wait to see Big Daddy hopefully beat him. Following Quinn’s defeat and subsequent departure I was over the moon when Kent Walton announced during a bout featuring Spiros Arion that Quinn was returning to our shores to menace us once again. The following are items from my own collection. Please feel free to comment about MJQ or add pictures articles of your own, but most of all enjoy.
RINGSPORT 1979
And finally for now another "Ebay" find, a signed collectible wrestling card.
"The Wrestler" January 1972.
More Feuding with Black Angus Cambell (our Wild Angus) "The Wrestler" December 1971.
And a few more, this time from "The Wrestler" dated November 1971 and features MJQ's feud with 'Black Angus Cambell' for the North American Heavyweight title.
Awesome pictures Gernot. I haven't seen those before, action shots against adversaries Leon White (Vader, Bull Power) Otto Wanz and a tag match featuring Indio Guajaro. The Austrians/Germans often billed Quinn as Alaskan but the European correspondent to American magazines correctly had him billed as Canadian. Many thanks for sharing.
Great pictures, thank you for sharing.
Some Pics from my collection....
Thanks Alan, appreciate the info.
Thanks Frank much appreciated. Yes just the once in solo action, but numerous times in tag matches, even before Quinn's first televised bout he faced Shirley several times in tag contests. I think Max must have tried out Quinn around the hall's first to both see how good he was and to gauge the crowd's reaction. Now this could be my memory playing tricks on me but i think i recall MJQ being booed before he took the microphone to speak from the M.C. in his very first televised appearance. Which made me think that he'd wrestled at that venue before and the crowd knew his style.
Wonderful collection. How many times did he face Daddy? Was it just the once.?
Gentlemen you are all most welcome 😉
Thank you Alan
Great stuff!
Fantastic collection. Thanks very much for taking the time to share.
Finally for now MJQ in a title contest against Fred Curry Jnr in Honolulu, Hawaii. Curry won by disqualification.
Some Big names on the above bill.
Webster was defeated by Quinn on numerous occasions and also by our very own Wayne Bridges!
More as John Quinn: Ebay find.
(I think the KY Butcher would mean some slightly different over here in Blighty, oo-er very painful!)
