In the Golden Years the Promoting of Individual Wrestlers was largely left up to the...
Promoters-Almost Exclusively!!
So it was a Massive Breakthrough when in NOVEMBER 1971-KENDO NAGASAKI
'Unveiled' his New MANAGER and Voice Piece-GORGEOUS GEORGE!!
This was YEARS ahead of its Time no doubt! but still involved TWO People!.....
But even before this New Innovation-there was one Wrestler who embarked on a One-Man
Self-Promotional Campaign-BRIAN MAXINE!
Even before he Won the BRITISH MIDDLEWEIGHT Title from CLAY THOMSON-also in
1971-and whilst still WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION-He was 'Blowing his own Trumpet'!
His Chosen Method was to 'Distribute' Personalised FLYERS-DIRECT to Fans at Shows!
Whether or not they wanted one- Dozens were 'Frisbeed' into the Audience everywhere MAXINE was Wrestling!-Even KENT WALTON got handed his own 'Special' Card!!!
This was Great Publicity for BRIAN-for while some who hated his Guts would either rip 'theirs' up or even throw them back at him-Many were kept-Including mine-so he was never not going to become a Household Name'!!
Later on he Developed this Vehicle to include his Musical 'Career' and Promote his LP.S!
I have plenty of Respect for GOLDBELT MAXINE-not least for which Year after Year he
turns up at the KENT WRESTLERS REUNION!
In fact I enjoyed Chatting with him in AUGUST this Year too!
Below one of his First Design Personalised FLYERS!- Did Anyone else keep them?
MAIN MASK
Quite possibly the biggest push in Dale Martin hisory.
Brian must have been an excellent employee to merit this.
Here are a few more from Maxine:
I agree Main Mask. This challenge would be just after Joyce and Capelli had moved over to the independents, along with George Kidd and Joe D'Orazio. Capelli was claiming the welterweight title, not sure about Joyce. So there was no way the challenge would ever be accepted - same as the challenge to McManus and Pallo when Dempsey left Joint for the independents.
Brian wasn't the first. This is from 1958.
Furthermore, I remember after Dempsey went over to the independents in the 1960s I was very surprised to find the seats at Preston Public Hall with a similarly worded challenge, this time targeting McManus and Pallo.
Admittedly I can't imagine Jack Dempsey parading around the hall distributing his leaflets in the way Brian did.
