Recently at a live event in Liverpool a wrestler picked up a member of the crowd[clearly a plant] and threw him into the chairs. This was quite shocking because it was unexpected. Did any members of this forum feel shocked by anything in a match in the Golden Era.
I once heard a wrestler regarded as a gentleman of the ring use choice four letter words to an opponent in the corridor at Wolves Civic Hall which seemed quite shocking at the time
One which is out there on YouTube involved Abe Ginsberg and Pete/Pat Curry. Abe leaned out of the ring and said to the MC something along the lines of “There’s a fellow up the back who fancies his chances, you can tell him that he can come down here any time he likes”.
Here's one for you Peter. Back in March 1968 the promoter of a tournament at the Community Hall, Grimsby was attacked. Half the main event failed to appear .The Red Devil was said to be an imposter and the fiinal straw was when a wrestler who had appeared earlier was forced to take part in the final contest. The promoter was chased by the crowd and had to be rescued by eight policemen and a police dog.
Any names ?
In the mid sixties a wrestler calling another "a black bastard."
Events can seem shocking the first time used.It is when promoters use them over and over again they become stale
I’ve posted recently about Vince Montana picking up a 15stone John Marshall and body slamming him onto a rotund female in the front work ( not a work).
An old post of mine…. , Bulldog Brower first tearing a little girls note book in pieces, then stepping on her hand when she tried to rescue said book then followed that up with pulling the childs granddad (a very little old man) over the top rope, throwing him into a turnbuckle and encoring by snaping the old fella’s walkinqg stick over his opponents neck, and all this before the bell rang to signal the start of the match. (Surely a work, but by golly Miss Molly, it looked kosher!
Another old post of mine…, I was M.C. when a worker, sore that he wasn’t on a featured match that evening, came out wearing a glove on his fist and sat defiantly on a turnbuckle, inviting the other contestants in the over the top rope free for all, to remove him. (Not a work. Hurt him and he’d probably sue the promoter and possibly the club. Somewhat embarrassing for everyone involved, he was talked down and accompanied to the dressing sheds by the Club’s security).
And yet another oldie…A wrestler, hitting his opponent with his shield ( he was doing a warrior gimmick) and the glass on the front of the shield shattered and showered the ring. A few minutes later and it was the front row of the audience who were showered, as an over enthusiastic youngster with a broom sent the glass flying in all directions.
I remember Marty Jones taking exception to a comment from a young man in the audience, I think it was in Cannock. Marty left the ring to "have a word" with the gentleman in question. This seemed unusual as Marty was a "blue eye" at the time, Marty must have been particularly offended at whatever was said.
At Liverpool Stadium in summer 1978 an angry mob broke off from watching a rather boring match to chase the Masked Outlaw (Kevin Cawley?) as he was leaving the building.
