I remember Bob Roop. He was very impressive. An American who came over here and actually wrestled, not our usual stereotypical American wrestler, i.e. not the usual boasting and rulebending. He was a class act.
I need to check, but think I remember Bob Roop having a hold called "The Sugar Hold", which was thought to be unbeatable.
From it's description it sounded like you had to let him put the hold on you, he wouldn't normally be able to get it on you in a real life situation.
At the weekly shows in Florida, they would offer $1000 for anyone in the audience to come into the ring with Bob Roop and get out of the Sugar Hold. No one did, except for one skinny young kid, who managed it (can't remember how), and of course, the promoter never had $1000, because they didn't expect anyone to get out of the hold.
They tried to say the young man had cheated, but the audience were on his side, and I think he eventually left the building and came back with the Police, which made the promoter pay up.
Bob Roop was an American amateur wrestler who represented the USA in Greco Roman Wrestling at the 1968 Olympic Games. Started out in Florida as a pro, and was the bloke that young rookies had to get in the training ring with, to see if they had what it takes to enter the business.
I remember seeing him on some obscure mid 80's US video tapes (when video rental stores were all the rage).
Bob had a pro career of almost 20 years which was cut short by injuries to his neck sustained in a car crash, normally a villain he was quite successful as a tag wrestler winning belts in a number of territories with such partners as Harley Race and Bob Orton Jr. He sustained a knee injury in the early to mid 1970s and I wonder he came to Europe and the UK to get ring fit away from the normal territories he worked.
There are several podcasts by Bob Roop on Wrestlecopia.com, with many mentions of British wrestlers, and his time over here.Tony Charles gets much praise
Thanks, Main Mask, great to see Bob Kirkwood becoming Southern England Champion. Geo del Rel couldn't get enought of Tibor Szakacs, used him loads, but never mastered the spelling.
Not sure why you single out Maidstone as having only 4 bouts? Alomost all the others had 4.
Certainly seeing Maxine up against the likes of Clive Myers and Marty Jones it makes me wrack my memory to remember how he managed.
I'd worry too about Iron Jaw in with Judo Pete - he'd come up to his navel!
But lovely memories, wallowing in the variety of it all.
I saw Bob Roop once in the opening bout on a Morrell and Beresford spectacular at Nottingham Ice Rink. He made short work of fellow American Butts Giraud.
Bob Roop was a major star in the USA,he was also massive in Japan, won titles, beat the best, and was a bill topper wherever he went.....see advert..
