As most of you know I search for and collect wrestling bills that are merely Newspaper Adverts.
Getting near 20,000 and usually I can find almost any wrestler , almost no matter how obscure.
In these troubled times I thought I would see what I can find that sticks out for me.
If you can imagine a world famous singer starting out in lowly night clubs , I have a couple of examples in Manchester in 1962. Worth appreciating that in those days these clubs would have been smoke filled and I should imagine a bit dirty. Cabaret was mixed with Wrestling and maybe Bingo and other stuff.
I notice March 6th and 7th 1962 were Tuesday and Wednesday.
It seems clear that the singer had stayed in a hotel (or even digs) overnight as he was not a Manchester man.
The clubs were in Ardwick and Chorlton. The wrestling actually features a young Johnny Saint on one bill and the other bill .the unidentified mystery Le Ghoul.
Maybe some of you will be able to add to the picture I paint.
Gerry Dorsey = Engelbert Humperdinck.........he's still alive as well
The club scene in Manchester was reportedly very vibrant. Sam Betts says that they would wrestle three times a night in the Manchester clubs, the last one obviously going on late. The wrestlers and cabaret acts were transported from club to club in mini buses. Engelbert Humperdinck was one he mentioned, the Bachelors were others, Apparently one of the Bachelors was a big wrestling fan and put on his own shows, and was a very good payer.
