Hi, I did see recently on a thread about tag partners fighting each other in solo contests. I can't now find it, so apologise in advance if my question has been dealt with before.
I was wondering if Mick McManus and Steve Logan ever fought each other in a solo contest that anyone on here is aware of?
Many thanks in advance for any answers.
Kind regards.
Peter
At the start of my wrestling in Manchester I met a young lad at Panther's Gym called Ian Wilson. V arious promoters sent me jobs e.g. Bertie Topham, Jack Cassidy, Wrytons, Orig Williams, Brian Dixon etc. Increasingly I found myself facing young Ian Wilson who was blossoming into a very skilful wrestler.
Jack Atherton needed a new tag team, a masked team, and called it Les Diable Rouges (The Red Devils from France). He asked Peter Lindberg and myself to be the team which was succesful fo about two years until Peter sustained a double injury to both his back and knee.
Jack recruited a new member - Ian Wilson! He was such a success that he became a permanent member of the team now billed as the Red Devils, The Red Devils went on a successful run that lasted for some twenty years and Ian developed into a first class ring villain.
Eventually the team disbanded an Ian and myself went our separate ways as solo wrestlers. me into the last couple of years of my career that started in 1963-4 and ended in 1985. Just before the end I got a big shock when ai found myself billed versus Ian in a solo bout; he was billed as Mad Dog Wilson, an arch villain of the day.
Old friendships disappeared and he gave me a very tough time. Talk about roles reversing!
Eddie Rose.
Did Bert Royal ever face Vic Faulkner?
I enjoyed Ballymoss's retelling of the Salvo v Rann episodes.
For me the most famous one was The Rebels. Tiger Ryan falling out in-ring with Penzy.
Since Ryan also disappeared soon after, it could have been the same reason and the same exit strategy as for Salvo.
Gotta feel sorry in each case for the orphaned tag partner who had been headlining.
Broughton Rangers Johnny South v Paul Mitchell is another example
Maybe there's a case for saying that:
When they'd done the rounds fighting each other, and realising their styles were similar, they just said let's tag.
Were there ever any Syd v Dennison matches?
Did The Artful Dodgers ever wrestle each other?
Maybe we should differentiate between those who fought each other before tagging, e.g. McManus/Logan, Ginsberg/Cutler, Kaye/Gilmore and those afterwards, such as Bartelli/Nagasaki and Daddy/Haystacks. Then there are those like St John/Svajic and Tunney/Finch (both independents) where promoters just didn't care.
There was a big bust up between the Riot Squad team Peter Rann and Pasquale Salvo at Bermondsey Baths and the pair engaged in a fight to the finish contest. Sadly I was unable to see this bout but I was informed Rann emerged as the winner. The reason for the split was Salvo was retiring from wrestling to concentrate on running his petrol station business full time.
Rann and Salvo were a very formidable duo who appeared underused by Dale Martin.Perhaps the promoter took the view they could create too much tension among the crowd. I always believed that Pasquale Salvo was one of the toughest wrestlers I had seen live. I think that was the finish of the Riot Squad and from there on Rann did not have a regular tag partner.
Did Bobby Barnes ever face Adrian Street?
Probably met quite a lot right from when Logan turned pro.
Here is one that ended up in a submission each.
