I think I mentioned it elsewhere, but March 26, 1953 is the title change from Lawrence to Dempsey.
Hi MM.. please can you tell me the promoter for the match where Mike Marino(another nice man to talk to) beat Norman Walsh.
For you people who didn't see Eric Taylor. Even from the first he was so well grounded that he looked like going somewhere in the paid ranks.
A very good technical wrestler, who could ,if required, mix it a bit.
First showing of Masambula at Newcastle. 5/1/52 k.o. Lew Roseby
Just going back to the very first one, 2nd January 1952. It doesn't give any inkling that Masambula was new, so it rather follows that he had been active in 1951. This is earlier than we have ever realised, I believe.
Splendid as always Mr Main Mask. So many of these names were still around when I was watching from 1965 onwards. It's hard to believe that Dennis Mitchell had been around for so long - he always looked young. Masambula never seemed to age. Interesting to see the champions specifically referred to as Mountevans champions. Fred Woolley was one I always enjoyed, though he must have been getting on when I saw him in the 1960s. Saw him quite a few times in with Johnny Saint, usually ending in an eight round draw, Also one cracking match with Jack Dempsey. Surprisingly I never saw Eric Taylor.
Dave Valentine was still playing professional rugby at the time of this bill. In fact he only wrestled for a couple of years as it clashed with his ruby commitments. In 1954 he captained Great Britain in the Rugby world cup.
Don Mendoza "a continental" from South Shields, near Newcastle !
Nice to see a photo of an old favourite.
I loved to watch Bernard Murray.
