Mike Bennett versus Terry Nylands was his first TV match in August 1964
Infamous really is his favourite word isn't it?
Mike Bennett and Terry Nylands was the opening match in the first Joint Promotions show I attended, in 1966. I can't remember anything about the match though except that it seemed pretty tame compared to matches on the independent bills. I did go on to observe that Mike was an extremely good wrestler of the time. In those days he was certainly a clean wrestler, and I was astounded when I resumed my interest in wrestling to find fans talking about him as a villain.
Marvellous Mike Bennett, was one of the best heels with his blind side of the ref tactics. He really knew how to work the crowd to generate the heat. And his wrestling skills were great.
Mike Bennett continued wrestling until 1990.
As a teenager his January 1965 fight versus Spaniard Vento Castella achieved the highest non Cup Final day viewing figures of the year.
Retrospectively 1965 is seen as the year British Professional Wrestling reached its peak in terms of TV viewing figures with broadcasts on BBC2 as well as ITV
