MAIN MASK
I forget from where it was televised, but Martin Conroy (for Wryton) gave Harry Kendall top billing for a TV outing which saw him partnering Masambula against Johnny Yearsley and Ivan Penzekoff.
Gotta hand it to our beloved Wild Man: top spot over a European title and a mask v mask.
Harry would have towered over him; very hard to find him a viable opponent. I think Bob Kirkwood must have been the ideal one as the pair even took their bout to Belfast. Mind you, Bob Kirkwood was everybody's ideal opponent.
Thanks Ron. One thing to have all those ads; quite another to locate the needle in the haystack so quickly.
Nearest to a main event for Harry Kendall I can find is this one at Bracknell.
Love that Edmonton bill, thank you.
Harry was a great wrestler, probably a shooter or whatever if he wanted to be.
The logistics were difficult here, Kendall from Brixton and Eagers from Sheffield. They made it work for a year or so but Danny Hegan was often called into the mix.
Harry never became a big name and I can't recall him ever being in a main event. He only ever seemed to wrestle the likes of Czeslaw and Kirkwood and Caswell.
But Eagers was a big name in singles, and suffered valiantly against Pallo and McManus etc.
Harry was tall and I am very surprised to see Eagers his equal in that photo.
We could debate differing views as to how disrespectful the description was AT THAT TIME. We could ask whether Kwango or Eagers were upset with their descriptions. We could say that calling Pallo "bombastic" or McManus "The Man You Love To Hate" or Masmbula a "Witchdoctor" was also offensive. Or Verdu as an ogre as above.
I recall Kent Walton going to great lengths in a bout between Kwango and Kirkwood (or someone) to distinguish the two because Kwango had white turndowns on his socks.
Yeah I know mate. Better times to be alive no doubt about it, but what an awful superior attitude we carried back then, it’s no wonder we’re paying the price today. Political correctness has gone way too far now but a bit of basic education and tolerance wouldn’t have gone a miss. Hope your knees have recovered btw.
Using their disabilities to sell a gimmick? Don’t think I like that. Almost a bad as Black Johnny Kwango and the other racist crap that was freely thrown around back then.
Saw Mike Eagers in singles action never in tag.
I watched Harry Kendall against Francis Sullivan at Preston. Sullivan won by a KO with a drop kick.
Very dated to refer to them as deaf and dumb
