I think you are being a bit unfair Rusian. It's true that very many amateurs looked down their noses at and did not want to be associated with the pro game but lots of others, including ex-olympians, were happy to turn pro. Still not sure about Wood though.
I do not think he was the same person as Olympic wrestler of the same name. This Billy Wood was a pro wrestler from the start. And had no amateur background.
I wondered why you should be so sceptical Ruslan. Then I remembered I've spent years teaching you to be sceptical. So I looked at our Heritage entry, always a good place to start. I was surprised to see that we too said we had not found a link. Might be we are doing him an injustice, but needs further investigation.
Yes Sir, precisely. Now that I finally learned my lesson...I became very sceptical, or maybe a better way to put it, I became summat more realistic about things esp when it comes to pro wrestling. Yes read this book, and found NO credible evidences of this person ever being an amateur of any level. He was a typical pro wrestling type guy. Thank You.
I do not think he was the same person as Olympic wrestler of the same name. This Billy Wood was a pro wrestler from the start. And had no amateur background. Many didn't. Let's remember it was rich parents' kids who enjoyed the amateur sports in Victorian and Edwardian times. Poor kids did pro from a get go. That meant money for them. And that, I mean a paycheck what it was all about. Always.
I used to have that book, and if memory serves, I thought a lot of the holds needed a willing participant to help put them in place. I could be wrong, of course.
Interesting statement that "negotiations are pending" building a picture of top level bargaining
i have that book, the old war time edition
