So, just looking through the posts on here and have a few answers.
Eddie (as I knew him) was my next door neighbour. As a kid he was a fairly intimidating figure, especially if you trod on his garden. However, when you knew him, he was a top bloke.
He lived with Avril and his two boys in Greenford, Borough of Ealing. I'll have to message Eddie's great nephew who lived with him to see what Eddie's real name was.
Quick bit of research shows that Avril was Avril Woods. I know her maiden name was Loxton as, well, I knew Avril's sister and her children.
That is fantastic research Ron. How you get from a complete unknown to real tangible facts remains a mystery to us mortals. Your research has been added as an Addendum to the Eddie Capelli tribute page.
It brings me also to the debut of Eddie Capelli. I can find nothing in the Plunkett Index to match this bill.
In addition to the info I have provided , it may be of some interest that Capelli's Grandfather was Vito Antonio Bottone from the town of Scala in Italy. He married an Englishwoman and Capelli's mother was born in Southwark in 1902. Grandfather was a Fruiterer and lived long enough to possibly see Eddie wrestle.
Happy today to bring back and clear up this old topic.
It was unusual that Eddie Capelli married Avril Loxton in Ealing in 1981. Reversing this and checking Avril Loxtons marriage I found that the registration is in triplicate. She also married Giovanni Woods and John Woods.
Giovanni Woods was born in Southwark District 28th January 1926 (and not 1927 as on most sources.) His father was a John G Woods who had married Giovannina Bottone in 1923 . I think to anglicise his name Giovanni Woods added the name John.
Eddie Capelli was just an alias similar to what Mick McManus and Steve Logan and Joe Dorazio and Mike Marino had all done.
John Giovanni Woods died in the second quarter of 2001 in Brent , Middlesex. The death reg confirms the date of birth as 28/1/1926. Age at death 75. The Kent reunion seems to have paid tribute 2 years later. Eddie Capelli was a genuine Anglo Italian.
Trawling through the Reunion archives for a piece we are doing at the moment I found reference to the award for Eddie Capelli. It was in August 2003 that his widow Avril accepted an award on his behalf.
So as Edward Botterill died two years later we can rule him out.
As mentioned upthread, an Eddie Capelli married an AVRIL Loxton in 1981, so it was either his real name, legally changed, or one helluva coincidence! Was he perhaps an Italian POW who settled in the UK, which would explain no birth record?
Second part of Jack Taylor's story. When he turned pro Jack was not used to soft holds and, after he wrestled Eddie, Capelli's wife asked him if he had a baby at home. 'Yes,' says Jack'. 'And do you treat him gently, cradle him, don't deliberately hurt him ?' 'Yes,' says Jack. 'Well,' says Mrs C. 'That's how I want you to treat my husband in future'.
You could be on to something with this Botterell fella Ron, same birthday, same area and not a Capelli in sight. At the moment though it's all guesswork and we need someone to confirm or deny. I've been through lots of articles about Capelli and not found any references to his private life that could give us a clue. It's odd that he's another who simply disappeared. Looking back through the Reunion newsletters I can't see any reference to his death in 2005. Odd.
It's a bit of a shame to squabble on a thread dedicated to a very good wrestler , so I will try and get back on track about Eddie.
A-Z has him retired mid seventies and I found him a few times playing golf for charity with the celebs. Similar to his cricket with McManus.
Various sources have his date of birth as 28th Jan 1927 and also in the Holborn area of London.
Although Capelli is a sparse surname , it is in the records but no birth or death of an Eddie Capelli ever in UK.
But remembering Steve Logan was John Logeland but died as Steve Logan. I did not give up.
In 1981 I found an Eddie Capelli marrying Avril Loxton in Ealing.
This is pure genealogy and also speculation and theory.
The only Edward/Edwin /etc I found born in the whole of London on 28th Jan 1927 was Edward William Botterell and that was Shoreditch which is pretty much the right place. This guy also married Winifred Wallace in Pancras in 1950 and there were a couple of Children.
Edward William Botterell died in early 2005 in Barnet.

A bit of late news on this one.

I seem to recall seeing a picture of his widow receiving a plaque at the Kent Reunion a number of years ago.
Second part of Jack Taylor's story. When he turned pro Jack was not used to soft holds and, after he wrestled Eddie, Capelli's wife asked him if he had a baby at home. 'Yes,' says Jack'. I saw Eddie Capelli, possibly first at Newcastle and then later at Wimbledon Palais.
I always rated him as a first class wrestler.
I was thinking about the Kent reunion and the bell tolling.
Is that record kept on a year by year basis.

I forgot to mention that following Edward Botterell back to grandparents I saw no trace of Anglo Italian and they were all Shoreditch people.
Not so far away from Blackfriars where Eddie was often billed from.
Well worth a look at some of this stuff.

Article has him born Saffron Hill , again the right area.

Big Question.... can anyone help.
Was Eddie Capelli ....Edward William Botterell.
