Thanks to all who contributed to this thread. I can't understand why I didn't see the adverts in a local paper. Norfolk Snake , please can you tell me which paper the adverts were in?
I went to a show in Norwich, Ray P. was M C and saw Ricky Knight and his son, also Steve Quintain. Sorry not too keen, to much mic work.
Modern wresting has changed so much, its really a completely different 'sport' to what it used to be. I cant take too much of it either but I can appreciate how much the WAW has changed with the times and produced some great performers. I would love to see many of todays current stars from all promotions go back to the WOS styled matches, rounds, rules and moves. There woud be some great matches and competitors for sure!
Into the late 1980s and 1990s it was Steve Quintain, the welterweight wrestler from Lowestoft who promoted. He produced good lively shows using a mixture of local wrestlers from East Anglia with bigger names from the Independent shows much as Goodrum had before. I m sure he used Rocco and Finlay amongst others. Steve still wrestles occasionally to this day for Ricky Knight's WAW.
From what I was told when the old pier was demolished Steve's ring was still in the building and went the same way. Don't know how true that is mind. It makes for good wrestling folklore though, perhaps Kellet and Kovacs were still in there bashing each other apart in their no time limit fight to a finish????
I was just wondering the same. Dynamite Kid was living in Canada in 1980 and 1981, and only came home for Christmas to see his family. So you can find UK dates in November and December of those years, but always for Joint Promotions, I think.
I know some of the other names could be moonlighting from Joint, but Mel Stuart seemed to be exclusively joint in 1980 and 1981.
Mal Stuart probaby came with Danny Lynch you'd imagine. I think Dynamite was home round about Christmas as he was wresting Rocco on TV about then? But I would say its another Goodrum billing scam. I cant imagine who it would have been though. Frank Cullen in his early years went as Kid Cullen and sometimes Dynamite Kid Cullen but can't imagine that was him either. The Kung Fu was most likely to have been Stefan French rather than Eddie Hammel maybe.
Here's a load of advertisements from 1980 going into 1981 from the Eastern Daily Press. Promotions were Trevor Denny of Norwich and Terry Goodrum - he of the King Kendo court case fame, and also wrestled himself as Sandon or Sandor Kovacs. Some interesting match ups from this hotbed of the then thriving independent scene
I remember going on holiday to Lowestoft mid-sixties, it was a tortuously long drive from London, but looks like Lincoln persisted. Some decimated bills though, clearly a few cars couldn't Hack the journey.
The Best of Five bout was in fact tag.
It looks like the whole Ange Blanc and White Angel thing was all condensed into about 12 months. With the benefit of hindsight, they could have strung it out for longer. But they probably needed to cash in quick with the new venture. And they had Starr on the horizon and big name Garfield in the bag, as below.
We can be sure Ange Blanc (Bob) sensationally beat Haystacks to set up the Dr Death bout a fortnight later.
Lowestoft wasn't a Lincoln venue on my horizons before this month. I just wonder how many other Lowestofts there are? I wish you, Main Mask, would take up the challenge of selecting Lincoln's Top Ten venues for the Promoters' Principal Venues thread.
Dale Martin ran there in the 1960's but we are missing a lot of the bills because they weren't in the newspaper (or at least, the paper Ray P looked in). I haven't looked myself yet. it's on the To Do list.
I can recall seeing a Cocky Ken Knight about this time wrestling for Brian Dixon at King's Lynn. Seemed like a good young villain with a future ahead of him. Wonder why he did nt go further. Anyone with any memories of him ?
And this opens another can of worms, which we all of course love.
Was L'Ange Blanc = The White Angel? = Judo Al Hayes.
The year is 1962 for sure. 5 months after the big Tooting unmasking. Maybe L'Ange Blanc name was a way of putting on the same show out in the provinces?
Mind you, if even one punter had been reading the Lincoln mouthpiece, Wrestling Scene, they would have created a stir. So maybe not Alfie....

I wonder who the Dynamite Kid was in these bills ? Not the original I'd imagine ? Who was Taro Sakata ?

I recall that when I. was at school a friend told me he had seen Anaconda at the Baths in Lowestoft. 1950 ?

I love to see how they milked these situations.
And Kamikaze lurking as well!
Hi Bernard
I know through the sixties and 70's there was Wrestling at the South Pier Pavilion and suspect it was Dale Martin.
I have only one newspaper bill for Lowestoft and it is way back.
Paul Lincoln did the Kensington ballroom in his era , in the Palais de Dance.
