Having just established that in 1944 Wryton took over The Parr Hall Warrington from Jack Cullen , I decided to have a look at how many venues they had round about this time.
Back in 1942 Jack Cullen promoted Wrestling at the Ideal Skating Rink in Hanley. He was in Hanley first and Wryton began to promote at the VIctoria Hall also in 1942.
On the face of it nothing unusual until I found in the press that they had a clause in Jack Pyes contract that he must not do any shows within 5 miles of Hanley. This came about , I think because he did a show for Cullen.
By the middle of 1943 , from what I can see , Jack Cullen and the Rink had finished.
Thus far I lean towards Hanley and Warrington as Wrytons first venues.
I am going to have a crack at their first ten.
Victoria Hall Hanley 1942
Parr hall Warrington 1944
Runcorn Baths 1945
New Brighton Tower 1946
Hartlepool Borough Hall 1946
Chester Drill Hall 1946
Bloxwich Baths 1946
Willenhall Baths 1946
Gosta Green Brum Stadium 1946
Witton Albion Ground 1946 (Northwich summer venture)
Evident that the growth came as soon as the war ended.
I am unsure but don't think Wryton did anywhere in Manchester this early. Levenshulme Rink a little later for sure.
Crewe also later I think (another Cullen venue), and Rugby Co-Op Hall 1949 again best guess.
May have done Southport Grosvenor Sports centre from 1947 but no branding on the bills. They were the custodian when it closed in 1950.
Hyde Town hall as early as 1942 is another possibility.
I am speculating here and not laying down a firm history and with a joint effort , it may be that we can tighten this up.
I know we have a member Bkendo1 researching Wryton , maybe Paul knows more or maybe he is looking more at WHO were Wryton.
Okay, another name to throw into the pot.
In 1946/7 we had just Wright and Cox as Directors.
Two years later, 1949 and a new name, D. Newman. Programme from Warrington, 8th February, 1949
What an enlightening thread this has turned into. Tremendous research by Ron taking us places we've never been before. Certainly no need for bkendo to apologise. It's anecdotes and half forgotten memories that provide the clues to move research on. True, we've not uncovered the mystery of the name but that's a small price to pay for the journey that's been made.
excellent work as always Ron. your research is magnificent.Without your skills my research was mainly anecdotal and memories fade, but for whats its worth. quick breakdown of what i learned the Wright family were from lostock green which i wrongly assumed was lostock nr Horwich but no and the Wright family still farm locally in cheshire.i recalled a bid sheet being submitted to s local district council signed by les harrison as director but cant see him listed again,he was however responsible for setting up a wrestling commitee with aces altrincham,he owned fent warehouse thomas street manchester with Arthur wright. Now here it gets confusing but bear with me the biggest fan at wryton stadium who got vip status as well as southport walkden etc was Majorie who owned wool shops chain, her shop being booking agents for wryton, she lived in Atherton her husbands name i think was bob cullen he was in the fent industry, cullen that name again.Everything Wryton revolves round crewe area invluding a gym. wrestlers starting out with Wryton were occasionally billed from shudehill very specific for tiny area of manchester but there was gym facilties over a pub owned by George Cox whos daugters ran wool shops ,to make matters worse im told majories sister was called Elsie. Her daughter was called Kim but wasnt the partner of martin conroy who was also called Kim. sorry for the ramblings im sure ib bored the entire forum. oh how i wished id have stuck my salford nose in more at the time, but even from the insiders some things were not to be asked about
Great piece of memorabilia from Mike and good research from Ron.
Donated my Mike Hallinan we now have a much more hard evidence of the picture 1946-47.
My own researched top 10 shows just five out of ten that are now listed at this stage. Of course this is fluid such as Warrington Baths now and not the Parr Hall (or maybe both)
I had an idea Hartlepool not listed was only a short venture.
More importantly two directors are listed and no mention of Tom Newton.
Who is Miss E Cox
Many thanks to Mike.
As far as I can see Tom Newton had been a Cheshire Strongman from Crewe who turned to wrestling. He refereed at many Wryton venues possibly starting at Hanley , but continued to wrestle as well for some time.
At best I believe it leans towards him being a right hand man in the same way that Conroy went on to be for Arthur Wright. As Hack has mentioned , he eventually worked away from Joint Promotions.
It looks pretty plain that he had not been a director.
Fast Forwards 10 years and E Bowman is now the other director shown below at Hanley.
Who is E Bowman , could it be Miss E Cox.
Well in 1951 a Miss Elsie Cox marries a George R Bowman in Manchester.
It's looks pretty clear we have the other director.
As mitchel.steve454 has failed us can bkendo1 tell us about any Arthur Wright and Tom Newton connection?
I always thought it has originated from a slang, an expression "RIGHT ON", and yes it starts with W, simply because Mr. Wright was the boss and he was always RIGHT ON too, wasn't he, just like all the bosses are?!
Tell us more about the Tom Newton and Wryton connection Smitchellsteve1954 if you know of one.
Tom was certainly well known in wrestling circles and was a mentor of young Geoff Condliffe. He was an a Cheshire amateur champion in 1931 and wrestling professionally from 1939 at the latest. He was referee at Hanley fron 1945 and a regular referee from then on.
By 1959 he was refereeing for the independents and promoting his own shows, so no connection with Wryton by then. He was involved in wrestling until the mid 1960s as referee and promoter.
He was 63 in 1971 when he was killed in a coach crash near Munich whilst returning from a ski-ing holiday in Austria. His son, Arthur, who was also a referee, was also injured in the crash.
Arthur WRYigt and Tom NewTON.
Of these venues Victoria Hall Hanley continued until 2022 but seems to have been dropped by All Star. Willenhall Baths had a one off event a few years ago that was packed to the rafters but not repeated
Fascinating stuff, I can't wait to read more about Wryton and their development from Ron, Paul and BKendo
As an outsider looking in, this one needs to be resolved in parallel with the people: who was/were Wryton at various points? When does the name Wryton first emerge?
