It depends on when the gig was booked, as a young un I was on holiday in Arran in 1972 and saw Slade as they had been booked from the summer before, the venue held about 300. It would be up to the act to appear or cancel, if it was a decent gig they'd still do it especially if they had other gigs close by

The AdamSmith Halls was a series of rooms opened in 1899, the cinema/theatre hall was created in 1973 it now holds 475 people so it could be that the hall for the wrestling held a could well have held more. I wonder if the Kirkaldy Odeon which burned down in 1974 was used as a wrestling venue at all, it held over 1200 and could have been a more profitable venue if available.

It was flattened by the luftwaffe in 1940, originally a boxing venue, it had a relatively short life for boxing and wrestling 1934-1940. The boxing promoter Jack Solomons got his start there.

They may well have been small venues that independents used but nothing near the capacity that Norman Morrell would have wanted, the only possibility would have been the Mecca Locarno, it had a capacity of around 2000 but it would be dependent on the layout so I would imagine the actual capacity with a clear view of the ring for boxing or wrestling would be substantially less.

Sunderland has always had a lack of venues for both wrestling and boxing after 1930 as a 3000 seater venue called The Stadium closed shop and was demolished shortly after. It wasn't til the late 1960s and into the 1970s where a venue became suitable for both boxing and wrestling and that was Crowtree Leisure Centre in the centre of Sunderland.

There was a wrestling show in the Metrocentre shopping centre in Gateshead about 20 years ago, it drew a fair sized crowd

you had regular shows in Whitley Bay, Tynemouth and South Shields (Bolingbroke Hall), and other venues in the area I would imagine the promoters at these venues would have been they gents who provided the ring and line up for the shows.

the corn exchange actually has two halls but they are in different floors hence the capacity per hall. But with a population of around 9000 it probably couldn't service a bigger building

He doesn't appear anywhere online, I wonder if he was a local business man or even manager of the dance hall who bought in the show from another promotion.

the Clayton Ballroom has come up before when we had a thread on Arni Bulloch I believe there's a photo of the Clayton on that thread, I believe the building is now a medical centre

it looks like it must have been a good size venue as there was a number of regional and area boxing title bouts fought there, I haven't been able to find the capacity but would hazard a guess at 2000+

Farrer Street opened in 1938 originally for boxing but there was a venue previous to Farrer Street called the Ring, there was also venue of the same name in nearby West Hartlepool also in the 1930s as well as the Borough Hall which I believe held wrestling shows.

The Royal Hall was a cinema in the 1950s and into the 1960's it was then made more flexible to accomodate conferences, events etc. Wrestling was probably thought to be not right originally for genteel Harrogate but the building had to make money and alongside the concerts, performances etc it would have been a welcome addition to the finances.

I knew of the Joint Shows I wonder if Whitby, Scarborough and possibly Skegness were Don Robinson promotions as he had has fingers in so many pies in the area.

the wrestling at Middlesbrough eventually moved to the Town Hall although unsure of the date. Did Morrell run Whitby Spa Pavilion?
