I think the last time I saw Brian Maxine wrestle was in 2007 on an LDN bill. I definitely saw him do a title defence against Blondie Barratt in 1999 or 2000, by which time he must have been past 60!

I seem to recall the Tory MP Graham Bright asking a Commons question about a planned chain match in Luton. It's definitely in Hansard - mid-80s, I think.

Having done Mastermind on a few occasions myself, I've definitely considered it! However they usually require two or three good reference books as source material, which makes me wonder what you could potentially use.

I attended the event as well, and as 1978 Kid says it was great to hear Peter tell those stories in person, not least because he's a natural raconteur! I especially loved the tale about George's "Isadora Duncan moment" in the car park at Croydon. He could easily have done a couple more hours and still kept us all enthralled!

On one of the Screensport shows at Hanley, someone (Mark Rocco, IIRC) hurls their opponent into what Maxton/Vince refers to as the hospital radio commentator's table, which would fit with Ron's cutting below.

The Screensport tent matches were filmed at the Garden Festival in Stoke-on-Trent.

@Powerlock these shows aired in about 1991, I think. Kate wasn't really wrestling but acting as manager to the tag team who took on a well past his best Daddy and (I think) Tony Stewart.

I watched that Oldham tag bout again the other night and Bobby does seem to take some heavy blows from Kirk and Harris. It also has a slightly odd ending - Shirley sets up the double elbow backdrop finisher on Mal, but the latter seems to get cold feet and moves to one side. Mal then gets up and climbs out of the ring, getting counted out in the process. I wonder if this was a hasty bit of improvisation?

I'm also intrigued that the WOS listing says that 'some or all of the following bouts' will be shown. Were the matches still going out live at this point, hence the uncertainty about who and what might appear?

Very sad news. He was a great heel, and it's always saddened me that I started going to live shows just a little too late to see him in action.

I do wonder how things might have been if, instead of Daddy being set up as the principal conqueror of Quinn, we'd seen a blue-eye(ish) turn from Stax. I imagine audiences would have cheered him in on the way that, in later years, they backed him against Kendo. And it surely would have been a bit more credible than seeing Mighty John going down to Shirley?

Any ideas as to who this version of Klondike Kate was? It's obviously a good ten years or so before Jane Porter adopted that moniker.

In Simon Garfield's book, Mal Sanders talks about losing a pint or so of blood after catching himself on the apron of the ring and hitting an artery. A ringside punter apparently suffered a heart attack whilst witnessing it.

Didn't Marty Jones suffer quite a nasty arm injury during a cage match at Croydon in the 1990s?

Wasn't there a plan to have Spiros Arion drop his world heavweight title to Shirley, but he refused, hence why he lost it to Wayne Bridges?

Given what has been said about Mick's status, it surprises me that he and the Iron Man agreed to be Big Daddy fall guys for what turned out to be their last TV appearance. Obviously this was in period where Shirley seemed to be defeating every major heel, but it seems odd that two of the seemingly toughest wrestlers in the business agreed to get belly butted and splashed.
