Hi Anglo. I know a couple of the boys who wrote bios, had a moan about how the French wanted to be all action and flying all over the ring while they believed they should control what the crowd wanted to see. Read the Dazzler’s ‘lesson learned’ from Mike Marino, if the crowd gets restless when one particular hold is applied for too long, then make them pay by leaving that hold, or a subsequent one on and on and on, until they’ve learnt their lesson. I’ve watched so much of the French game in the last decade, that I believe their work rate, was well above many of our own guys and most of the matches were very watchable indeed. I expect it all boiled down to the universal (at the time), dislike of the French in general. One Hundred Years’ War and all that. (much longer than that actually). Is it still the same in the U.K. today, anyone? I’m presuming Anglo is still with Gil Azzurri and the Triclore.

You are absolutely correct. Whenever I think of one I think of the other, two of my favourite wrestlers. Checkout the Checkmate anyway and we might even raise a ‘Les Thornton, WAS The Checkmate, argument’. (Could have been, on occasion).

Makes up for all his non speaking parts and many times hidden in the background on the Scottish t.v. series Still Game ( which, I am thoroughly enjoying, for a second time).

He was always good to watch, although like Mick and Nagasaki, you were pretty certain he was going to win. Repeating what I’ve written before, his match on YouTube, against a very young Steve Wright, showed how good Brian could be, giving the youngster plenty of spots to shine before pulling off a ‘lucky’ win. If you can find it, he was in an episode of an early ‘Bill” playing a paramedic and even having a couple of lines.

I talked to him very briefly, when he first toured Down-Under with McMahon’s circus. He told me he had never seen Tibor wrestle. Nice man.

A great post Russian! When you view the two pieces of artwork, you still see the ‘crossover’ between the two styles. The All In extra holds / moves added to the interest and (sometimes) excitement and then the biff and barge was an extra ingredient, maybe as a nod to the way fights were carried out on the street. An example of the latter, would be the later American preponderance to (pretend) to use the closed fist to the face. Very few practitioners could do that believably and yet they still insist on showcasing that today. Wrestling, it’s a funny old game.

Maybe…. Campbell and Purvey were seen as ‘real’ known persons (to some) and the names Hindel, Miller, Rogers and Limes were figments of a script writers’ imagination? I wonder if any wrestling follower started up fan clubs for Bill, Sid, Ted or Ken. M.M. may even have pictures of them? The investigation begins. Does it though? Probably not.
