In Memories of the Old Days
As you know, I make since yeaers reasearch about the tournaments in vienna especially at the famous "heumarkt". In 1954 from mid July to august 28 there was a "Johnson" in vienna. There is barely anything written in the papers. So the information on this tournament are only shortened to the last names and the pairings. I always tought that "Johnson" was Ron Johnson but now I have more evidence that it could be Black Butcher. Does anybody some results for this time frame? So I can maybe cancel one Johnson from my list. Or is this a total different Johnson? Maybe it helps if you know some other british wrestler from this tournament . Mike Barrett, Morandi, Masambula, Dennis Mitchell, Tommy Mann, Cyril Knowles, Chic Purvey (both only for one match) and Dave Valentine. Thank you for your help

Once again I need help from the comunity. In 1957 there was a O' Neil at the Heumarkt tournament in vienna. I always tought it was Terry O' Neil, but I had in mind it was a little early. Now I found a picture of a Patric O' Neil who fits more in the time frame. But I never heard the name before and I couldnt find him in the A-Z list. Thank all as always.

Again have a question about a, probably british wrestler taking part of the great vienna tournament at the "Heumarkt". From June 7th to 14th 72, a Yukon was here to wrestle for a few bouts. I found a Billy Yukon in the A-Z. Could it be him? As you can see at the paper clip other participants are Shirley Crabtree (here as John Crabstree), Jack Rowlands, Don Vines and El Cameron. Maybe this helps a little bit. Thank you

I need again the help of the community. In 1960 there appears a Bill Ellis (also billed as Bob) from scottland in the newspaper announcing his debut at the "Heumarkt" tournament in vienna. He was original planed to wrestle on august the 13th but due the weather (Heumarkt was an open air venue) he had his only confirmed match on august 17th. It was a loose to veteran Joschi Kovacs. Does anybody knows who this could be. And no it was not the US wrestler with the same name.

In 1958 there was for the first week in july, according to the paper, a english wrestler named Acroyd in vienna at the famous Heumarkt tournament. It was for the european championship. Does anybody ever heard the name? Maybe he wasnt from the UK.

I would like to ask if someone has any information about this guy. He wrestled in the mid 90s in the uk either as Tony Rico, Rico Morales or Rico the Gladiator. In 1997 he was at the last ever Heumarkt tournament in vienna as Rico the Cuba. I wonder if he is still with us and if anybody here knows his real name or heritage. Thank you

This is from the A-Z Sektion.... Paul Anton Vargas 1956, 1957 and 1959 Spanish visitor to Britain who kindly dropped the European middleweight title to Bolton's Bert Royal at Hanley in October, 1956. We can find no information about him winning the title. Opponents included Charlie Fisher, Black Butcher Johnson and Jean Morandi (all at the Royal Albert Hall). Worked in Germany under the name Bela Vargyas I dont know if Paul Anton Vargas was from Spain. But if he was he was not Bela Vargyas. This was a austrian-hungarian wrestler named Harry Aaron Vargyas.

In 1961 there wrestled a Charly Nuttal in vienna at the famous heumarkt. I always thought this was George Nuttal. Now I was able to find a picture of him standing in the ring in vienna. Can anyone confirm my guess? Thanx.

I am a partowner of a wrestling promotion in austria. We had a show last weekend and booked a 19. year old kid from london named Cal Newmann. So when we talked he told me that his granddad was a professional wrestler called Tony Granzi. The name wasnt familar with me so I looked at the a-z section and here we go. I just want to let you know this story.

Hope I can find help. Still working on my book about the wrestling history in vienna. Felix Kerschitz organized the famous "Heumarkt" tournament in 53 and 54. He had good contacts to england and used a bunch of guys from the UK. Next year he was replaced by german legend Gustl Kaiser. So in 1955 he started his own European championship tournament at the "Engelmann Arena". Beside his star O.K. 1 (Dennis Mitchell) he booked only local and unknown talents. But at the end of june I find a "Wood" in the papers. I checked the A-Z section and found a handfull with this name. Billy and Micky probably wasnt around anymore and for Roy and Alan 1955 seems to early. Not much known about Ken. Maybe the Wood here was non of them. But I count on you guys....

As I told before I am currently working on a book about the vienna "heumarkt" tournaments. Alf wrestled in vienna 50, 52, 54, 60. He was named Nathan Rubinsohn and was billed from canada. It was written in some 1950 newspapers that he always wear a championshp belt when he comes to the ring. Any guess what belt this could be? Is this the belt Alf carrys in the A-Z section? Or was it maybe a belt from his boxing carrere. He was billed as "KO-King" and winns every match with a knockout punch. Thank you
