I saw him as heel when her subbed for Fit Finlay are Reading Played the role very well.

I read it and have to say it was enjoyable. I wasn't keen on the writing style and the other trivia relating to dates was a distraction. But I have always thought there were a lot of urban myths about the man which were borne out of hatred and it was good to see other perspectives on some of these incidents. I think what we often get are some chinese whispers. It was also interesting to get a glimpse of his home life too. I would never pretend he was the superstar he was promoted to be, just a guy who had to work, so so many need to.

I was at Croydon when Jones was injured. I remember thinking the cage looked dangerous and Marty actually ran his fingers over the spikes before hand looking concerned. His distress was clear as he went straight to Danny Collins and offered his arm for submission. The cage didnt have a door and a second had to come with a ratchet and remove one of the clamps to let him out.

I saw some fantastic battles against Marty Jones, he could mix it up anywhere and any style. It seems a long time since he announced his retirement dues to heart problems, i assumed he was older. A great loss.

He has tumbled over the ropes on more than one occassion. When tagging with Dave Finlay he went out the same way. I am sure its happened a few times in tag matches. Not a move i would try at his weight. Only needs a rope to slack or break and it would have been a serious spinal injury.

His matches late 80's and into the 90's were very predictable and the novelty value wore off. He was still a bill topper, but i think this was more in anticipation of what might occur. His matches always left me feeling a little flat.

Jonathan Ross said he was a fan when Kendo Nagasaki appeared on 'They Think its all Over'. Not sure about Jimmy Greaves but he was involved in the publicity for All Stars TV debut and ended up in the ring with Kendo.

Gimick matches with tables, ladders, cages etc. Just too much pandering to the american scene.

Daddy aside, he fought the likes of Greg Valentine, Kid Mchoy, Pete Ross etc.

There are matches on youtube, one in particular is Scrubber againsts Kid McHoy where her executes the highest back drop i have ever seen. He did seem to be billed against lighter opponents a lot.

He's lost a lot of weight and had knee replacements, but from what i saw he can still move and still uses the off the rope splash.

Amazingly Giant Haystacks was not averse to the odd ladder match. I think these were before his weight really ballooned, but possibly offered something different from his one dimensional matches. I read a report of him meeting Tom Tyrone on a ladder match and Tyrone taking the win after knicking Haystacks to the floor. The Nagasaki match to launch All Star on TV was dreadful by his own admission and i think he is credited with bringing the gimmick back from the states. I was no fan of cage matches either, these gimick matches distract from the wrestling.

My guess would be Finlay was heel. Rocco was also feuding with Marty Jones at the time and it we Rocco we cheered for with Jones playing the heel.

I think like Santa, the magic went for us all at some point. I think this makes it even more creditable that we cared about wins/loses and title changes. The like of Jones, Finlay, Bridges, Breaks made us care.

I remember seeing his name on a poster in a chip shop in a coastal holiday camp. I thought he had long since retired, ignorant as i was of Allstar at the time. I remember him fighting Marty Jones in the late 80's and it didn't lack any intensity. He gave is all despite age or schedule a real star.

Yes when wresters were fighting 5 nights a week, i guess there would have been a lot of title matches. Shame really. Maybe the opposite should have been true and titles saved for big Albert Hall shows or televised spectaculars. But i suppose it was about putting bums on seats and a title match was a way to increase the gate. I thought Marty Jones held the Mid-heavyweight tilte with distinction and had some credible loses with the likes of Finlay and Steve Wright. Jim Breaks also lost his title on a number of occassions.

You could see from John's demeanour that her wanted to put on a show and he relished being a bad guy. With John Quinn on the bill, you were guaranteed emotion by the bucket load, regardless of opponent.

I wasnt there, but saw a pic of Big Daddy wrestling on training mats. The ring hadn't arrived so they went ahead on gym mats.
