"THE ANGEL-NOT in Caricature!.....Or IS it??". That's one of my favorite pictures of Maurice as a proper gentleman. It's one they also used on his gravestone.

@adrianpollard.shangri-la - I have talked to Karl's family. In actuality they died 13 hour apart. Karl / Karl's wife & Maurice went in on a mansion together and turned it into a boarding house. Maurice & Karl got sick around the same time. They lived in different rooms in the house and when Karl died, in the house, Olga - Karl's wife - went to Maurice and told him Karl had passed. Maurice said something to the equivalent of "Then there is no more reason for me to stay". He died in the cook county hospital 13 hours later. I've been to the mansion. It's a bit of a rough neighborhood these days but has a wonderful owner. She got her hands on the original plans that Karl & Maurice put together that was turning the house into a boarding house. It's 10,000+ square feet. The neighbor somehow ended up with those original plans. I have pictures.

@adrianpollard.shangri-la - I've always been interested in the character development of "The Angel" in the 30's and into the 40's. In the beginning he was marketed as savage, etc. But this particular notation "super-dopey" is one that I am interested in. Almost universally Maurice is marketed, at least in the U.S., as intelligent. I always wondered how long his being marketed as being, less than intelligent being, lasted. I have one picture that clearly is representative of this and thought I would share.

I was introduced in the connection of Kathleen Look & Karl in the King's Coronation program. Maurice would have been in training with Karl at the time Karl took part in the program. I think it has been pretty well-established that Karl took 2nd in that tournament. I am a little careful with OAKELEY's 1971 book and what he reports about Maurice as I have other writings from OAKELEY that differ. What's clear though is how much he appreciated Karl. One of the things mentioned in the book was how Karl, Maurice, and Manoogian were lived Christian values. In Karl's case not so much religious, as just a good guy. Not too long ago I was chatting with Lanny Poffo, asking if he had any memory of his father's remembrances of Karl. He said his dad would mimic what Karl would say to people in Karl's accent, saying, "What kind mon are you?". The quote reminded me of what OAKELEY said about Karl's values.

bjh99 - Thanks for letting me know. It reminds of something someone shared with me a couple of years ago. He took a picture of it at the CAC in 2018. The poster might look familiar. The copy adrianpollard.shangri-la has shared here I think is #3 I have seen. Maybe 4. The colors make me think that Karl Pojello likely had them created and I've wanted to know if Karl's stamp is on the back. It is on two other hard card-stock posters I have.

adrianpollard.shangri-la - I have been looking for that exact poster for quite some time. If you ever come up with a “I don’t want to sell it price” please let me know!! You mentioned the poster being from the 1930’s. I’m curious why you might place it during the late 30’s. My initial thought would have been from the early 40's after Harvard Anthropology measured Maurice and "declared him" the closest living physical specimen to Neanderthal. I am curious if the "throwback" image started back in Europe.
