That great Visionary and Entrepreneur PAUL LINCOLN certainly knew how to create
Exotic and Appealing Colourful Ring Characters!!
He 'transformed' the Bombay Born Supporting Film Actor-MILTON REID into the
'Fearsome' MIGHTY CHANG-complete with his SUMATRAN DEATH HOLD!!
He became quite a mini-sensation on LINCOLN Bills!
Who remembers CHANG? Better still did Anyone SEE him Wrestle?
MAIN MASK
And he certainly made for a good poster. Even the newspaper bills were splendid.
Does anyone know what the "SUMATRA DEATH HOLD" actually was? Was it a nervehold? I've also read newspaper clippings about his "karate chops." Was he a power wrestler who used the Asian stereotypes of chops/nerveholds? Thanks!
My first sightings of Milton Reid was when I was in my late Teens. There was a series on Television which name eludes me, but it was something to do with sailing ships, pirate type of series. I thought then what a strong and well-built character he was.
Unfortunately, I never got to meet him as a fellow wrestler, but when I here Sam (Dwight Ingleburgh) at the Blackpool reunions talking about the time when they were on tour in India, he must have been a great character.
I would also like to say that he would have played a much better role as “Odd Job” as Harold Sakata, who in my opinion was too “Stiff” for the role.
Cheers
In fact, I have found an American wrestler called Lou Bertucci, wrestling in Krefeld, Germany as Jungle Boy in 1956, at one of the tournaments. I guess he could have wrestled over here at the same time?
Yes I am sure it must be him, his son (Milton Reid Junior) has said that he turned pro in 1952 as Jungle Boy, although that is not to say that others could have used the name as well.
I have this result, I wonder if it was him?
September 1st, 1952 – Newcastle, England
Les Kellett drew Dennis Mitchell
Ernest Baldwin beat Cyril Morris
Jim Lewis beat Tony Lawrence
Tommy Robinson beat Jungle Boy
I've been told Milton started out as Jungle Boy around 1952. The earliest I find him as Chang is 1960 working for Paul Lincoln. Dwight J Ingleburgh told me of the time he went to India with Milton. They went to a club to watch some traditional dancing. Inside watching the dancing they heard a din (Dwight's words) outside. The manager of the club came over and asked them to accompany him. He took them to a first floor balcony where they saw a massive throng chanting, "Chang, Chang, Chang."
Here's a 1960s poster from Main Mask. It's a 1960 Paul Lincoln show. Interesting to see that Chang's name is so much bigger than Armstrong's. Okay, he was being put over as the bigger star. But the poster diminishes the quality of the poster. Surely the opponent needs to be given credibility to emphasis the magnificence of the victor. Note also Ken Joyce and George Kidd drafted on to the independents. A fantastic bill.
Dead right Shangri-la, I wasn't 100% about Africa , but I though if it was wrong someone might of known where exactly. Regards Les 💪
Sorry I'm not sure, but what I do remember is that Milton Reid was very well spoken and polite person which was most unusual for a wrestler (I hope that statement isn't to judgemental about wrestlers?? ) also if I remember correctly Milton Reid was born in South Africa? Regards Les 💪
Milton Reid in his St. Bruno ad days

Hi guys, I myself wrestled on one of Don Robinson 's Bill's at I think was Middlesbrough town hall and top of the bill was Mighty Chang (Milton Reid) versus Eric Taylor. A great bout Mighty Chang wrestled barefoot,at that time Milton Reid appeared in several St Bruno adverts on the T.V.. Also around that time Milton Reid picked up my friend Jimmy boy Devlin at Scotch corner in a large American car and went on a wrestling tour around Scotland!!! That must have been a great experience for Boy Devlin. 😊 💪 Regards Les.
Milton Reid certainly had the look of a great wrestling villain, no doubt about that, and I think I read he was short listed for the role of Odd Job in the James Bond film , Goldfinger. He later appeared (briefly) with Roger Moore in The Spy Who Loved Me, but was overshadowed by Richard Kiel as "Jaws".
I remember him wrapped in a towel following Suzy Mandel into the massage room in feature film "Come Play With Me". I forget the details of the film but, if i recall correctly, Mr. Reid failed to get the "happy ending" massage he was hoping for and Suzy hit him over the head with a frying pan. The film was a vehicle to show off the talents of Mary Millington who committed suicide some years later and was directed by and starred George Harrison Marks who, I recall, had used Bruno Elrington as a naughty caveman in one of his soft porn films some years earlier. Other stars of "Come Play With Me", if i recall correctly, included Alfie Bass, Ken Parry, Norman Vaughan, Irene Handl, Rita Webb and Cardew Robinson who was also involved in "Fun At St.Fanny's". I recall that when meeting someone for the first time he used to cough politely and say, "Cardew do?"
I never saw Milton Reid wrestle and my Mighty Chang on my promotions was Brian Mason of Portsmouth.
Hi MAIN MASK .One of my big regrets is not seeing him live, however,it was indeed a fantastic ring character, which has been used by other wrestlers since. Remember him in the tobacco adverts and his many parts in films.Great physique and really looked the part. You are also correct when you say Paul Lincoln was a great visionary. He was so creative and years ahead of his time.
