A series of contrasting shows today.
We begin with a late 1950s, 1958 show at Loughborough presented by independent promoter Jack Taylor. In the 1960s Jack promoted daily shows around the country
Another independent show, this rime promoters Ron Farrar and Al Marshall at Pudsey in 1972
In contrast you would have to pop along to one of these shows for a selection of the names you knew from television. A 1967 Dale Martin show in Rochester.
A 1970 Relwykow & Green show in Hull.
For once I think I'd head south to Rochester.
Where would you go?
I would have gone to the Rochester show just to see Bruno v Bull Davis, but the rest of the bill looks OK to me.
Here's the topic
I think his first name was Peter. Has the old file on him been deleted.
James Morton 2d
We had a few posts on Wonderboy a few years back. He went in with Assirati. There was a second Wonderboy who was much lighter a few years later. I don't think the first was Lamb but I may be forgetting.
I was only putting two and two together James (because of the polio reference) so might well have come up with five.
Dave Barrie did not turn Professional until eight years after Johnny Saint. He had some very impressive wins at the height of his TV career. Retrospectively he is to be admired because he built his career without playing on his fathers name. It is just unfortunate that once Kellett retired so did he

Saint had been around for well over ten years in 1971 so was much more experienced than Barrie. I too would have been surprised by this result. When Saint first came over from the opposition in 1969 he was given some amazing results to begin with, decisive wins over Logan, Breaks, Faulkner. By 1971 he was established as a leading lightweight so the promoters could afford to let him lose to someone else they were pushing at the time.
Wonder Boy in Anglo Italian's poster was most likely "Lucky" Bert Lamb who had survived polio as a child.
Always great to see Heritage Member Al Tarzo. here's the bill at the top of the thread. Early sighting of Cancer Research, too:
Agreed, it would have been a shock later.
Thank yo Sax. I wasn't aware of the relative experiences of the 2 men.
The promoter could also make a difference.
Of course later in their careers, I think, it would have been a bit of a shock
Hi Sax. Can you please tell me where the Saint v Barrie match took place?
Does that seem a surprising result to you?
Wrestling overseas, on this day, Dynamite Kid won the Stampede British Commonwealth Mid-Heavyweight title, defeating Bret Hart, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, on this day in 1979.
On our TV screens, on this day in 1971:-
Johnny Saint (0) v Dave Barrie (1)
Ian Campbell (0) v Rocky Wall (0)
No-one over middleweight there in Kirkby but a great bill.
Twice above we can see Colbeck and Cortez had a thing going; Colbeck as a baddie saw him at his best.
Surprising to see masked Ct Bartelli not top of the bill. Over-exposure in his little area, I imagine.
Czeslaw with hair , brilliant Ost.
Shrewsbury 1962:
Four from me.
Hull for me, although I would be intrigued to see one of Ron Farrar's events.
On our TV screens on January 6th, 1962, quite local to me, Chesterfield
Dai Sullivan (2) v Enrique Marquess (1)
Roy Bull Davis v Syed Saif Shah
Bert Royal v Tommy Mann
Jim Breaks v Vassilios Mantopolous
