In Memories of the Old Days
Hi everyone,
Unfortunately I am the bearer of sad news. Dave Cameron passed away on the evening of 24 March 2025 (New Zealand time). He was 91. Dave had battled with some health issues for the past few years and was living in an assisted living facility in Auckland.
A fan of boxing & wrestling since childhood, Dave competed in both activities as an amateur. He also picked up in interest in writing (and later added photography to that) and his earliest published articles appeared in The Ring boxing magazine & MAT wrestling magazine in the early 1950's.
Dave moved to the UK in 1958 hoping to get into professional wrestling due to the wider range of weight classes, but he was still undersized and only had a handful of bouts for Dale Martin promotions. However, he found other roles in photography, journalism and publicity. He also met his wife Shirley, in London.
Moving back to NZ around 1964, Dave & Shirley then alternated between NZ & the UK for the next few years, settling for good in New Zealand in 1971. Dave remained in contact with many wrestlers from the UK for the rest of their lives, whether they stayed in the UK or moved somewhere else. Dave had many great memories of his time in the UK and a huge collection of memorabilia, which he loved to share with people.
sincerely,
Steve Ogilvie.

This is a bit of an obscure one, and more relevant to boxing than wrestling. However, I know we have a few folks here familiar with Manchester and its wrestling connections, so I wondered if anyone remembered the Lonsdale Gymnasium Club that was in Smithfield Market.
If you look at the photos in this newspaper advertisement they had a collection of old wrestling posters, independent ones too. Seems like it may have been a short-lived enterprise.

We have a great repository of wrestling items between the collect group here at Heritage. I know this, because i've often asked for images of obscure names, and in most cases, been rewarded here with an answer. With the unfortunate demise of the Galleries, I'd like to provide a photo-based reference topic that can benefit anyone at anytime (especially through use of the search function).
I feel that between everyone here, we should be able to locate photos of just about every wrestler who worked regularly in the UK in the "golden age" and where possible, their autograph too. This is really helpful to the wider wrestling collector/historian/enthusiast interest base. Please join me in adding to this thread, over time, when requests are received on the forum.
Thanks in advance.

Obit for former wrestler Roy Smith aka Little Legs aka Fuzzy Ball Kaye.
Certainly lived a colourful life but was not regarded well on a personal level by the other wrestlers.

He might have been the stranger on the shore, but he wasn't one to the wrestling ring. I know Ron had posted a bill for the Golden Bowler hat tournament before, but I couldn't locate it in the search. So have posted another clipping for that, for now:

I've just added a few new galleries to that section of the website. - Ashfield district towns Sutton-in-Ashfield & Kirkby-in-Ashfield, many thanks to Main Mask who had supplied many of these images to the forum. I had a dozen or more that i've added to his. - Hackney Empire (Paul Lincoln promotions). This is from Dave C's vast collection of Lincoln items. If I get a chance I may be able to add another one or two more galleries. Flash player (which the "upload photos" button feature uses) is not being supported after December 31, 2020 so it might be the last lot I can add for a while until a workaround is reached.

As both a thank you to MM for all his contributions, and on the date of this man's debut, I hope you all get a kick out of this early Kendo Nagasaki promotional flyer. I believe this is from the around the timeframe of his debut, possibly even before it. It's double-sided in magenta (still bold even after a few decades of fading) print.

Hi all, Finally got my technical issues sorted, and am able to add images to the website once again. I have started a gallery of Dave C's fabulous collection of British posters, in particular from the year 1959. I will post in this topic each time I add new posters to the gallery. Hopefully this link works: https://www.wrestlingheritage.co.uk/apps/photos/album?albumid=16228330

Been spending this unexpected free time sorting out photos. Here's something cool for Bernard that I snapped last December and just got around to. Enjoy!

I noticed Main Mask was interested in the discussion we were having about Tibor Szakacs getting top billing in Dale Martin land. I thought i'd take a sample at random, to show some of the different main events he was billed in. I hope you enjoy this very international journey. We'll start at the Royal Albert Hall, here Tibor's matched with wrestlers from the United States, Turkey, New Zealand, Germany and even Panama:

As I posted in another topic, for a while, Paul Lincoln sent out typewritten bills by mail to some sort of subscriber base. I don't have more details, but as folks had mentioned that they'd never seen these pieces of collateral before, I thought i'd post what I have here: This was the one I posted in the other topic, for a show at Manor Place Baths (usually run by DeMarto):

In response to MM's excellent early 50's bills topic that I took keen interest in, I have put up another couple of galleries of wrestling bills. This time i've gone with Mask's local - King's Hall Belle Vue. Most of the bills/programmes are from the 1960's although there are a few later ones. MM if you have time (and/or inclination) feel free to add more items to the Belle Vue gallery - it would make it a very comprehensive collection if you did. Not sure how to embed a link here (perhaps Hack or Anglo can tidy this up): https://www.wrestlingheritage.co.uk/apps/photos/album?albumid=16170103 I've also done another gallery for Liverpool Stadium in the 60's.

Not sure if anyone here was going to shows at the time, but if so, would love to read any recollections of this feud and the unmasking, if it registered with you. (Photo by Dave Cameron, who was there. )

Here are a couple of newspaper clippings from January 1970 on the pay strike within British wrestling. Was this common knowledge amongst the fans? What about fans outside of the London area? I'm interested to learn what the fans did and didn't know (or cared to know).

One of the more enduring mysteries is that of Kim Kendo. We can find him as early as 1960. I have a couple of promo photos, one of which was used in Paul Lincoln programmes (the kimono is the same in both), the other is signed: What's as equally as interesting, and I thought MAIN MASK especially would get a kick out of this, is his 1966 run with Dale Martin. Whilst I have yet to find Kim Kendo & Kendo Nagasaki on the same show, I have found at least two bills with Kim Kendo tagging with either member of the Hells Angels, Barnes & Street: It gives his home billing as Chelsea. So a local London guy? Was his martial art background legitimate? Who could we talk to, in order to learn more about him?

A neat curio I came across typed onto the back of a handbill. A whole crew headed to Norwich, some 58 years ago. Wish we could join them.

In 1976, as far as I can unearth, Dale Martin promoted wrestling returned to Staines after an absence of more than 20 years. What makes this minor footnote worth anything is the erm, 'quality' of the programmes that were produced for the first few shows, by some keen member of the local Lions club, who were sponsoring the shows:

Doing my research, i've come across a lot of materials from Paul Lincoln promotions (or Lincoln-Alexander promotions as was often printed), and rather than do separate topics about things I noticed or intrigued me, I figured best to make one topic where I can stick everything. (I also have some very rare photos from the office itself, which I will share when I return from holiday)
But please, feel free to share your memories and info about this very popular and successful independent promotion and the wrestler behind it all.
