In Memories of the Old Days
When I was very young and beards were, something of a rarity in the outside world a poster advertising a bearded wrestler —Ken Davies, Benny —indicated something very usual and therefore a villain who would get his beard pulled one hoped. Were there any bearded blue-eyes back in say the 60s and who was the first ?

We hear a great deal about shoot-outs and whether Nagasaki could/would/did beat Billy Robinson. But what exactly were they ? How were they decided? Fall/submissions/ exhaustion. Were they for training purposes or for clearing the air between two wrestlers in a private match? How often did they occur? Was there a referee? Help please.

There have been plenty of boxers turned wrestler but were any of them any good ? Or were they carried by their long suffering opponents? Jackie Turpin seems to have been one of the better ones. Any views ?

I've just been watching the violinist Andre Rieu and then a you tube of the singer Josef Locke. I thought both of them had the audience under total control from the moment they entered the stage. Which wrestlers had the same ability to control an audience whether favourable or hostile? Jack Pye certainly - he could do that from the dressing room - but which others ?

Around the 93 minute mark in Chariots of Fire there is a scene outside a Paris cafe with a Catch poster in the window. It seems to have the names of the wrestlers on it. One looked liked Bordes. I haven't the technical ability to read it by stopping the tape etc. Can anyone help please? The film is set in 1924 and I wonder if any posters survived from that period or if it was a mock-up.

Can anyone say what happened to Dave Larsen. The A-Z has him disappearing after a short career with Paul Lincoln. Did he ever appear as one of Lincoln's White Angels? He certainly went to Paris as Batman and if my French is correct he was also the villainous Zarak in a string of bouts with Walter Bordes. There's one on this week's Caida. Anyone know any more ?

Reading Eddie Rose's most interesting article I remember reading a story about a prominent (Australian?) wrestler who developed an eye disease from dirt on the ring canvas and went blind. Anyone know anything of this or am I misremembering ?

Watching the old 1961 film Freedom to die with Bruce Seton as a crooked wrestling promoter (could there be such a thing?} in his office there was a poster which seemed to be Marino v Two Rivers. I couldn't make out the rest of the bill or when it was. I presume it was genuine. There were also other bills which I could not make out. Anyone know anything about it? A bit after the start there was a wrestling sequence with two lightweights. Any ideas who they were ?

Wonderboy Watching an old 1953 film Th Blue Parrot in a cafe there is a poster for Wonderboy v Assirati. Also on the biill is Charlie Scott v Big Bill Verna (I think). Mike Hallinan tells me Wonderboy was Peter Stanley but he doesn't appear on the Heritage list. Can anyone say anything about him. He must have been useful (or a fool) to go in with Assirati.

Do I remember correctly that in one of his pre-Dr Death incarnations Paul Lincoln was a villainous Japanese after he stained his body with walnut juice. If so who was his tag partner?

I don't know what Hack and A-I or other members think and I know the subject has been raised before but I wonder whether the time has come to recognise women wrestlers and place the alongside the men. More and more of ther bouts seem to be on YouTube and some (particularly Rusty Blair) are really good. I wonder, if for a start (and I know Ron made a list a year or so ago they could be put at the end of each letter of the alphabet and as we know more of them they could appear in the main text. Mitzi and Klondyke Kate are two immediate examples. What do you all think? Here is a potential entry for one well known woman and one for a lesser known wrestler. Sue Brittain, Lady Satan (Marjorie Farrar) Throughout her career she fought for Women’s Rights battling with local councils who had banned female wrestling. Women’s wrestling had been banned in London since the 1930 and her biggest win came in 1979 when helped by the Equal Opportunities Commission she won a two day hearing against the GLC to allow her to appear at Wimbledon Town Hall to defend her BWA title against Jane St John. She won that bout in Round 6 with a Boston Crab. After the bout had taken place an Appeal Tribunal promptly reversed the decision and women’s wrestling was again banned. Wrestler Al Marshall called her the ‘Emmeline Pankhurst of wrestling’. She began her career in borrowed boots when a wrestler failed to appear at Whitley Bay and was knocked out by Maria Rivoldi who became a regular opponent. In 1970 she and her husband Ron Farrar set up the British Wrestling Alliance and that year she won the British Wrestling Alliance women’s title. Except for a short period when she was defeated by Akala Jan in Bradford before regaining the title a fortnight later she held this from 1970 until she retired in 1982. The title then passed to Lady Dawn. After her retirement she appeared a few times in a mask as Lady Satan —who unsurprisingly also favoured the Boston Crab.. She also held the BWA Mixed title with Mike Demain. An uncompromising heel, citing family commitments Brittain declined invitations to wrestle in Europe and America where Ring magazine placed her in their Top 10 rankings. She died in Pudsey aged 76 in April 2013. Suzie McDonald Aka Trudy Saturn (Trudy Fitzhenry) Trudy Fitzhenry was the sister of Kid Brannigan , In the daytime she was an Inner City Farm Education teacher. Trained in Birmingham by Pete Evans she restled in UK, India and the Lebanon. She retired in 1970s following birth of her first child and back injuries. Lena Blair, Miss Lena, Leather Lena (Barbara Swann) And the start of one for a third Bella Ogluna From Llandudno Trained by Orig Williams wrestled in Nigeria in 1979

I think after many months I have actually managed to get back on line. The reference however is not to me but to Peter Stanley, Watching an old black and white film The Blue Parrot in one sequence in a cafe there is a poster for Assirati v Wonderboy. The second match is Spenser Churchill and Guy Lombardo. I couldn't find Wonderboy on the Heritage site and Mike Hallinan tells me he was Peter Stanley who fought Assirati on a number of occasions. Anything more known about him?
